UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL GEORGIA (UWCG) IS COMMITTED TO DISRUPTING THE CYCLE OF GENERATIONAL POVERTY IN CENTRAL GEORGIA. WE ARE DOING THIS BY INVESTING IN THE WORK OF HIGH QUALITY NONPROFITS AND PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS MANAGING SEVERAL KEY INITIATIVES FOCUSED ON EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT: READ UNITED THAT PROVIDES VOLUNTEER TUTORS FOR K-3RD GRADERS; OUR COMMUNITY SCHOOL MODEL THAT PLACES SCHOOLS AT THE CENTER OF NEIGHBORHOODS, MAKING THEM HUBS AROUND WHICH THE COMMUNITY GATHERS AND DEPLOYS ITS RESOURCES TO CREATE BETTER OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD; PARENTS AS TEACHERS THAT PROVIDES IN-HOME PARENT EDUCATORS TO SUPPORT NEW MOTHERS; FIRST STEPS THAT SCREENS NEW BIRTHS AND CONNECTS MOTHERS TO NEEDED SERVICES; DOLLY PARTON IMAGINATION LIBRARY THAT PROVIDES ELIGIBLE CHILDREN FROM BIRTH TO FIVE WITH FREE, AGE-APPROPRIATE BOOKS; 2-1-1, OUR 24 HR/7 DAY/WEEK CALL CENTER THAT CONNECTS PEOPLE TO NEEDED RESOURCES; MISSION UNITED, OUR ONE ON ONE NAVIGATION SOLUTION TO ASSISTS VETERANS REACLIMATING INTO CIVILIAN LIFE; PINK PROMISE UNITED THAT PROVIDES FREE MAMMOGRAMS AND TRANSPORTATION TO UNINSURED AND UNDER-INSURED WOMEN.


UWCG OWNS AND OPERATES TWO COMMERCIAL OFFICE BUILDINGS AS COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTERS AND LEASES SPACE TO UNAFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS AT BELOW MARKET RATES TO SUPPORT AND EXPAND THE EXEMPT EFFORTS OF THOSE ORGANIZATIONS. ANY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION CAN BOOK MEETING FACILITIES AT THESE SITES.


UWCG LEADS THE READ2SUCCEED INITIATIVE, WHICH INCLUDES THE TUTORING PROGRAMS READ2SUCCEED AND AARP FOUNDATION EXPERIENCE CORPS. READ UNITED ADDRESSES LITERACY CHALLENGES FACING CENTRAL GEORGIA BY RECRUITING COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO TUTOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE STUDENTS. READING PROFICIENTLY BY THE END OF THIRD GRADE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PREDICTOR OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AND CARREER SUCCESS. THE READ2SUCCEED PROGRAM RECRUITS VOLUNTEERS 18 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER WHO WILL TUTOR STUDENTS FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR A WEEK. AARP FOUNDATION EXPERIENCE CORPS FINDS MENTORS 50 YERAS OF AGE OR OLDER TO TUTOR THOSE STUDENTS IN READING. THE UWCG PREPARES AT-RISK PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN AND YOUND STUDENTS THROUGH FIRST STEPS AND PARENTS AS TEACHERS INITIATIVES.
