SEIU DISTRICT 1199 SEEKS TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ITS MEMBERS AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE BY IMPROVING THE WORKING CONDITIONS, WAGES AND BENEFITS OF ITS MEMBERS. IT DOES THIS BY REPRESENTING THEM IN COLLECTIVE BARGAINING NEGOTIATIONS WITH THEIR EMPLOYERS, ARBITRATING LABOR DISPUTES AND ORGANIZING NEW BARGAINING UNITS. SEIU DISTRICT 1199 REPRESENTS APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MEMBERS THROUGHOUT WEST VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY AND OHIO.

MEMBERS WERE ORGANIZED INTO COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNITS AND REPRESENTED IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH THEIR EMPLOYERS AS WELL AS JOB ACTIONS. LEADERS WERE TRAINED TO STRENGTHEN THE UNION AND MEMBERS WERE KEPT ABREAST OF EVENTS THAT AFFECT THEM ON A LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEVEL.
