THE PURPOSE OF ECHO IS TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY BY ASSISTING THOSE WHO SUFFER THE EFFECT OF LONG-TERM POVERTY AS WELL AS PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING AN EMERGENCY NEED. ECHO PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, FOOD, CLOTHING, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE.

ECHO ASSISTED 1,472 UNDUPLICATED HOUSEHOLDS (5,511 INDIVIDUALS) IN FY 2021. WHEN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BEGAN IN MARCH, 2020, ECHO EXPERIENCED A SHARP INCREASE IN CLIENTS NEEDING ASSISTANCE AND FOCUSED ITS EFFORTS ON FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR HOUSING AND UTILITIES, FOOD ASSISTANCE, CHILDREN'S CLOTHING, AND SCHOOL BACKPACKS. THAT FOCUS CONTINUED THROUGH FY 2021. DURING THE YEAR 331 HOUSEHOLDS RECEIVED ASSISTANCE TO PAY BILLS FOR HOUSING, UTILITIES, PRESCRIPTIONS, AND OTHER ESSENTIAL NEEDS. IN ADDITION, 243 HOUSEHOLDS RECEIVED ASSISTANCE THROUGH COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS WITH FAIRFAX COUNTY UNDER THE CARES ACT AND THE EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. CLIENTS RECEIVED 393,717 POUNDS OF FOOD PLUS $57,100 IN AN EXPANDED PROGRAM OF COUPONS FOR FRESH PRODUCE, MEAT AND MILK; 2,236 CLOTHING BAGS; AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS VALUED AT $58,301. 1,223 CHILDREN RECEIVED BACKPACKS FILLED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES. INCLUDED IN THE HOUSEHOLD ITEMS WERE 14 REFURBISHED COMPUTERS AND 1,967 ENRICHMENT BAGS CONTAINING BOOKS AND TOYS FOR CHILDREN OF CLIENT FAMILIES. BEGINNING IN MARCH, ECHO PROVIDED ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO FAMILIES WITH INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN, SUPPLYING FULL CASES OF DISPOSABLE DIAPERS ON A MONTHLY BASIS. 646 FAMILIES RECEIVED HOLIDAY FOOD, AND 585 CHILDREN FROM 258 FAMILIES RECEIVED HOLIDAY GIFTS IN A PROGRAM MODIFIED TO INTEGRATE ALL COVID SAFETY REQUIREMENTS. DESPITE COVID-RELATED CHALLENGES, ECHO WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN ITS ALL-VOLUNTEER STAFFING AT THE NECESSARY LEVELS TO MEET THE CRITICAL NEEDS OF ITS CLIENTS.
