FNLM IS DEDICATED TO INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF AND ENGAGEMENT WITH THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE ("NLM"). IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING GENERAL SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY FOR NLM, FNLM CONDUCTS PROGRAMS THAT ALIGN WITH NLM'S MISSION AND GOALS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION VIA CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS. THE FNLM AWARDS DINNER/GALA IS HELD ANNUALLY TO RECOGNIZE LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE, MEDICAL SERVICES, MEDICAL LIBRARIANS, AND PUBLIC FIGURES WHOSE WORK DEMONSTRATES INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP IN MEDICAL SCIENCE AND HEALTHCARE ISSUES.
MINORITY STUDENT OUTREACH PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS EFFORTS TO ENCOURAGE URBAN AND MINORITY STUDENTS TO DEVELOP INTEREST IN HEALTH CAREERS. THE PROGRAM CURRENTLY INCLUDES SEMINARS FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED MINORITY STUDENTS LOCATED IN URBAN AREA REGIONS, AN AFTER-SCHOOL CURRICULUM STUDY ON "HUMAN BIOLOGY AND DISEASE" IN SIX NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS LOCATED IN THE BRONX AND HARLEM, AND AN IN-CLASS COURSE ON HEALTHCARE CAREERS IN TWO SCHOOLS, ALL TAUGHT BY DISTINGUISHED MEDICAL FACULTY.
NIH MEDLINEPLUS MAGAZINE IS A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION THAT REPORTS ON ADVANCES IN HEALTH RESEARCH AND PRACTICAL HEALTHCARE INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS. IT ALSO INCREASES ACCESS TO NIH'S MEDLINEPLUS.GOV, RUN BY NLM, WHERE ADDITIONAL RELIABLE, UP-TO-DATE HEALTH INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND. MEDLINEPLUS IS FREE OF ADVERTISING; CURRENT DISTRIBUTION VOLUME IS 100,000 TO 300,000 PER ISSUE. MEDLINEPLUS SALUD IS A BILINGUAL MAGAZINE OFFERING GENERAL HEALTH INFORMATION AND INFORMATION ON HEALTH ISSUES OF HISPANICS. IT IS ALSO FREE OF ADVERTISEMENTS AND DIRECTS READERS TO THE SPANISH VERSION OF THE MEDLINEPLUS WEBSITE, MEDLINEPLUS.GOV/SPANISH. CURRENT DISTRIBUTION IS APPROXIMATELY 80,000 PER ISSUE.
