THE NRECA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION HELPS BRING ELECTRICITY TO PEOPLE LIVING IN RURAL AREAS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. BY PARTNERING WITH US ELECTRIC CO-OPS AND OTHER ORGATNIZATIONS, WE HELP BRING HOPE AND LIGHT TO VILLAGES WORLDWIDE.

THE DONATED EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS PROGRAM PROVIDED THE MEANS BY WHICH U.S. ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES AND OTHER UTILITIES CAN DONATE THEIR VALUABLE USED ELECTRICAL POWER EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS TO COOPERATIVES AND UTILITIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THE TYPE OF EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL DONATED INCLUDES VEHICLES, LINE HARDWARE, ETC. THE FOUNDATION SHIPPED DONATED ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT TO VARIOUS RECIPIENTS IN TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. THE ESTIMATED MARKET VALUE OF ALL DONATED EQUIPMENT IS $69,539.
THE EDUCATION AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAM PROVIDED U.S. ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE EMPLOYEES AS WELL AS OTHER INDIVIDUALS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK ON VARIOUS FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE HANDS-ON KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER BETWEEN U.S. ENGINEERS, LINEMAN AND THEIR OVERSEAS COUNTERPARTS. THIS PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES THE FOUNDATION'S SISTER COOP INITIATIVE THAT PROVIDES U.S. ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO "SISTER" WITH AN OVERSEAS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE SISTER COOP INITIATIVE IS TO BUILD LONG-TERM TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN U.S. AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. IN 2016, THE FOUNDATION SENT 78 VOLUNTEERS TO THREE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND ESTIMATED VALUE OF THEIR DONATED TIME NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RETURN IS $625,352.
THE PURPOSE OF THE OVERSEAS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IS TO (1) STRENGTHEN EXISTING ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES AND (2) HELP CREATE NEW ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES. PROJECTS THAT TYPICALLY MAKE UP THIS PROGRAM ARE THOSE THAT ACTUALLY BUILD ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION LINES TO RURAL VILLAGES THAT DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE ELECTRICITY. THESE PROJECTS EITHER CREATE NEW INDEPENDENT COOPERATIVES OR EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN THE CAPACITY OF EXISTING OVERSEAS COOPERATIVES. EACH PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE LONG-TERM ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY OF THE COOPERATIVE AND THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES. THE FOUNDATION IS CURRENTLY SUPPORTING ELECTRIFICATION PROJECTS IN: BOLIVIA COSTA RICA, GUATEMALA, HAITI, THE PHILIPPINES AND SUDAN.
