ESPI AIMS TO ADDRESS INEQUITY OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ACADEMICALLY ADVANCE STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY FROM BLACK AND LATINO FAMILIES, IN RACIALLY ISOLATED AND LOW INCOME ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN NEW YORK CITY.

ESPI'S CITY SMART SCHOLARS 5TH THROUGH 8TH GRADE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS FROM FAMILIES WHO CANNOT AFFORD PRIVATE TUTORING AND ARE FROM COMMUNITIES WHICH ARE UNDER-REPRESENTED IN NEW YORK CITY'S SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS. THE 2021 PROGRAM MET REMOTLY DURING THE SPRING, UNTIL JUNE, THEN MOVED TO IN PERSON AT HUNTER COLLEGE MAIN CAMPUS FOR THE SUMMER. STUDENTS WORKED FOR A FULL DAY, RECEIVING INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH AND PREPARATION FOR THE NEW YORK STATE 5TH GRADE TEST.STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED THE PROGRAM BECAME ELIGIBLE FOR A FIVE-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM THAT EMPHASIZED WRITING AND CRITICAL READING SKILLS AND MATH PROBLEM-SOLVING. THOSE WHO RECEIVE HIGH SCORES ON THEIR 4TH GRADE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH TESTS WERE ALSO ELIGIBLE FOR A MULTI-WEEK PROGRAM IN THE FALL TO PREPARE THEM FOR THE HUNTER COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL (HCHS) ADMISSIONS TEST, GIVEN TO 6TH GRADERS IN MAY 2021. ENRICHMENT CONTINUED THROUGH 8TH GRADE TO ASSIST STUDENTS WITH PREPARATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSION TESTS.IN 2021, APPROXIMATELY 90 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE ESPI PROGRAM.
