IMI PONO NO KA AINA IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM THAT REACHED 1,903 VIA STUDENT ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES, NATIVE HAWAIIAN FOREST RESTORATION SERVICE-LEARNING TRIPS, AND EDUCATION AND OUTREACH AT COMMUNITY EVENTS IN 2021.


NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION WORK AT KEAUHOU AND LUPEA IN 2021 INCLUDED RE-FORESTATION OF FORMER PASTURELAND (10,388 NATIVE SEEDLINGS PLANTED) AND MONITORING OF RESTORATION EFFORTS (33 PLOTS); MONITORING OF UNGULATE ACTIVITY ALONG 4 TRANSECTS AS WELL AS ALONG FENCELINES AND ROADS (80 KM); REPEAT INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE OF 33 MILES OF UNGULATE-PROOF FENCE; CONTROL OF TARGET WEEDS OVER 540 ACRES (FAYA TREES, BLACKBERRY, HIMALAYAN RASPBERRY, MYSORE RASPBERRY, BANANA POKA); WEED SURVEYS ALONG 7 KM OF TRANSECTS, GENERAL VEGETATION ASSESSMENT AT LUPEA FOR 15 PLOTS, FOREST BIRD SURVEYS AT KEAUHOU (19 TRANSECTS, 335 STATIONS).


HAWAII NEI IS AN ANNUAL JURIED ART EXHIBITION TO PROMOTE AND FEATURE NATIVE SPECIES OF HAWAII ISLAND. THE EXHIBITION FEATURES WORK FROM ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO RENOWNED LOCAL ARTISTS AND IS OPEN FOR PUBLIC VIEWING FOR ONE AND HALF MONTHS IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES OF COVID- 19, THE PROGRAM REACHED A TOTAL OF 1,751 PEOPLE IN 2021: 1,159 PEOPLE VIA THE ART EXHIBITION AND 592 PEOPLE VIA ITS ASSOCIATED EVENTS.
