IN 2021, DEEP VELLUM FULFILLED OUR MOST ROBUST PUBLISHING SCHEDULE TO DATE INCLUDING 30 TRANSLATIONS AND 20 ENGLISH-ORIGINAL WORKS ACROSS FIVE EDITORIAL IMPRINTS, INCLUDING THE FIRST BOOKS PUBLISHED AFTER DALKEY ARCHIVE PRESS BECAME PART OF DEEP VELLUM. THESE BOOKS SPANNED VARIOUS GENRESINCLUDING POETRY, FICTION, NONFICTION, MEMOIR, AND OUR FIRST EVER PLAYAND SUBJECT MATTERS, TACKLING MANY CONTEMPORARY THEMES THAT RESONATE WITH OUR READERSHIP. WE WERE ABLE TO SPOTLIGHT STORIES FROM DALLAS THROUGH WORKS SUCH AS PENNY CANDY: A CONFECTION BY THE FIRST-EVER DALLAS THEATER CENTER PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE, JONATHAN NORTON; LEGENDARY PORTUGUESE WRITER ANTONIO LOBO ANTUNESS WARNING TO THE CROCODILES, AND A REPRINT OF THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK IN DALLAS, THE ACCOMMODATION: THE POLITICS OF RACE IN AN AMERICAN CITY BY JIM SCHUTZE, WHILE ALSO BRINGING AUTHORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD READERS FROM OUR HOMEBASE IN DALLAS. SOME OF OUR MOST NOTABLE TRANSLATIONS THIS YEAR INCLUDE RAISED BY WOLVES: POEMS AND CONVERSATIONS BY TAIWANESE POET AND FILMMAKER AMANG, WINNER OF THE PEN TRANSLATION PRIZE FOR POETRY; FEM BY MAGDA CARNECI FROM ROMANIA, SHORTLISTED FOR THE PEN TRANSLATION PRIZE FOR FICTION; AND WINTER PHOENIX, THE DEBUT BOOK BY VIETNAMESE-AMERICAN POET SOPHIA TERAZAWA, SHORTLISTED FOR THE CLMP FIRECRACKER AWARD FOR POETRY.IN ORDER TO FULFILL OUR MISSION OF BEGINNING THE WORLD INTO CONVERSATION THROUGH LITERATURE, WE AIM TO HOLD EVENTS PUTTING LITERATURE AT THE FOREFRONT SO THAT WE MAY CONNECT READERS AND WRITERS MORE INTIMATELY, BOTH ON THE PAGE AND THROUGH DISCUSSION-DRIVEN EVENTS IN PERSON AND VIRTUAL. OUR MOST NOTABLE AUTHOR DISCUSSION IN 2021 WAS ON SEPTEMBER 14TH AT THE PITTMAN HOTEL IN DALLAS. DEEP VELLUM HELD A LAUNCH EVENT CELEBRATING THE RELAUNCH OF THE ACCOMMODATION. FOR THIS EVENT, WE INVITED 150 INFLUENTIAL MEMBERS OF THE DALLAS COMMUNITY TO HEAR A CONVERSATION BETWEEN AUTHOR JIM SCHUTZE AND DALLAS COUNTY COMMISSIONER JOHN WILEY PRICE, WHO WROTE THE FOREWORD TO THE BOOK. DEEP VELLUM HAS ALSO MADE EFFORTS IN THE PAST YEAR TO EXPAND THE LITERARY COMMUNITY IN DALLAS AND ENGAGE WITH THE WIDER ARTS AND CULTURE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING HOSTING DOZENS OF EVENTS WITH AUTHORS, INCLUDING MULTIPLE BOOK CLUBS. THE DEEP VELLUM ZINE FEST WAS HELD ON OCTOBER 10TH TO ENCOURAGE LOCAL ARTISTS TO DISPLAY THEIR WORK, AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WERE ABLE TO PATRONIZE AND SPOTLIGHT THESE ARTISTS, WITH APPROXIMATELY 250 ATTENDEES.THE ACQUISITION OF DALKEY ARCHIVE PRESS ("DAP") BROUGHT APPROXIMATELY 900 BACKLIST TITLES, INCLUDING 3 NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS, INTO DEEP VELLUMS LIST OF PUBLISHED BOOKS, TO KEEP THE MISSION OF STRUGGLING DAP GOING TO PUBLISH THE WORLDS GREATEST LITERATURE AND TO KEEP THESE WORKS IN PRINT FOR READERS TO DISCOVER AND ENJOY THROUGH THE YEARS.
