Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

IN 2021, EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW MADE SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON BEHALF OF PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY. WE FOUGHT FOR VOTING RIGHTS IN TENNESSEE FOR MORE THAN 451,000 TENNESSEEANS WITH FELONY RECORDS. UNDER CURRENT LAW, TENNESSEE AUTOMATICALLY STRIPS ANYONE CONVICTED OF A FELONY OF THE RIGHT TO VOTE. THE RESULT OF THIS POLICY IS THAT MORE THAN 9% OF THE TOTAL VOTING AGE POPULATION OF TENNESSEE AND MORE THAN 21% OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN VOTING AGE POPULATION CANNOT VOTE.THE VOTING RIGHTS RESTORATION PROCESS CREATED WAS SO CONVOLUTED AS TO MAKE IT ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO REGAIN THE RIGHT TO VOTE, AND APPLICANTS IN SOME COUNTIES ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO PAY A MODERN-DAY POLL TAX IN THE FORM OF A FEE TO RESTORE THEIR RIGHTS. WE SECURED EARLY VICTORIES IN THIS CASE IN 2021 WHEN THE STATE AGREED TO UPDATE ITS VOTER REGISTRATION FORM TO BE MORE CLEAR ABOUT WHO AMONG THOSE WITH FELONY CONVICTIONS IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE. ADDITIONALLY, WE CONTINUED TO CHALLENGE THE USE OF ABUSIVE PRIVATIZED PROBATION IN CALIFORNIA AND MONTANA. FOR-PROFIT COMPANIES CHARGE EXORBITANT FEES FOR COURT-RELATED SUPERVISION AND THREATEN INDIVIDUALS WITH JAIL IF THEY CANNOT PAY THE FEES, CREATING A DEBTORS' PRISON. WE CONTINUED OUR FIGHT IN THIS ISSUE AREA IN CALIFORNIA AND FILED A NEW CASE IN 2021 IN MONTANA. WE ALSO CHALLENGED THE CRIMINALIZATION OF FAILURE TO PAY RENT IN ARKANSAS. IF A TENANT FALLS BEHIND ON RENT FOR JUST ONE DAY, FOR ANY REASON, LANDLORDS ARE GIVEN THE OPTION OF A CRIMINAL EVICTION AND THE TENANT CAN BE CHARGED WITH A CRIMINAL OFFENSE AND A FINE. WE FILED A LAWSUIT TO CHALLENGE THIS LAW.
