THE MISSION OF THE FRIENDS OF THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER IS TO OPERATE AN ART CENTER TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION AND INSTRUCTION IN THE FINE ARTS TO BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS OF ALL LEVELS, TO CONDUCT OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN ARTS EDUCATION, AND TO OTHERWISE PROMOTE AND FOSTER ARTS EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS INCLUDE A VETERANS PROGRAM THAT TYPICALLY PROVIDES WEEKLY ART CLASSES TO VETERANS ON THE CAMPUS OF THE WESTWOOD VA AND IN THE SPINAL CORD INJURY DEPARTMENT OF THE LONG BEACH VA. THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER WORKS WITH OTHER NONPROFITS SUCH AS 18TH STREET ARTS CENTER AND THE YMCA TO PROVIDE FREE COMMUNITY ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT THE ART CENTER AND OUT IN THE COMMUNITY. TO ENSURE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO THE ARTS, THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER AWARDED MORE THAN $34,000 IN FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS IN NEED DURING THE 2021 TAX YEAR.

PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONAL FINE ARTS CLASSES IN THE VISUAL ARTS TO APPROXIMATELY 2,400 CHILDREN, TEENS, ADULTS, AND SENIORS. (PRE-PANDEMIC: 2,400 IN-PERSON ENROLLMENTS; FY2021-22: 1,637 ONLINE ENROLLMENTS)
PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO LOW-INCOME ADULTS AND CHILDREN BY REDUCING OR ELIMINATING SCHOOL FEES TO ENSURE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO THE ARTS. AWARDED APPROXIMATELY $15,500 IN FEE REDUCTIONS AND SUPPLIES.
EXEMPT PURPOSE ACHIEVEMENTS: PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC CLOSURES IN MARCH 2020, THREE TEACHING ARTISTS SPENT MORE THAN 150 TEACHING HOURS PROVIDING FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION AT NO COST TO VETERANS AT THE WESTWOOD AND LONG BEACH VETERANS ADMINISTRATION CAMPUSES. DURING THE CLOSURES, ONE FACULTY MEMBER HAS CONTINUED TO PROVIDE 122 HOURS OF FREE ONLINE FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION TO VETERANS AT THE LONG BEACH VETERANS ADMINISTRATION CAMPUS OVER THE COURSE OF TWO YEARS. IN NOVEMBER 2021, A SECOND TEACHING ARTIST RESUMED FREE IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION FOR VETERANS ONSITE AT THE WESTWOOD VETERANS ADMINISTRATION, COMPLETING 106 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION FOR 193 PARTICIPANTS TO DATE.
