Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
SWESR IS DEDICATED TO RESCUING ENGLISH SETTERS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHWEST UNITED STATES. WE REHABILITATE ENGLISH SETTERS BY PROVIDING FULL MEDICAL CARE AND BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENTS IN A FOSTER HOME IN ORDER TO PREPARE THEM FOR ADOPTION. TO ENSURE ALL SWESR DOGS ARE PLACED IN LOVING, PERMANENT HOMES, WE SCREEN AND QUALIFY ADOPTERS AND PROVIDE ONGOING GUIDANCE FOR THE LIFE OF EACH DOG. SWESR PROMOTES ANIMAL WELFARE THROUGH COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH AND VALUES POSITIVE TEAMWORK WITHIN OUR ORGANIZATION AS WELL AS PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS RESCUES.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SWESR RESCUED, VETTED AND FOSTERED APPROXIMATELY 44 ENGLISH SETTER DOGS IN THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES DURING 2022. ALL SWESR DOGS LIVE IN FOSTER HOMES WHERE THEIR ENERGY LEVEL, TEMPERAMENT, TRAINING AND OTHER SKILLS CAN BE ASSESSED PRIOR TO ADOPTION. ALL OUR DOGS RECEIVE A COMPLETE VET EXAM, ARE SPAYED OR NEUTERED, BROUGHT UP-TO-DATE ON VACCINATIONS, TESTED AND TREATED FOR HEARTWORMS, CHAGAS AND OTHER PARASITES IF NEEDED, GIVEN HEARTWORM PREVENTION AND MICRO-CHIPPED BEFORE ADOPTION. IN 2022 SWESR CONTINUED TICK DISEASE TESTING FOR ALL DOGS RESCUED IN OKLAHOMA AND TEXAS. IN 2022 SWESR CONTINUED CHAGAS DISEASE TESTING FOR DOGS RESCUED IN TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA. BECAUSE OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE THE BEST POSSIBLE PLACEMENT FOR A DOG, WE WORK CLOSELY WITH PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION IN A WELL MATCHED HOME.
CHAGAS IS A GROWING THREAT IN THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE COUNTRY. VERY SOON, RESEARCHERS EXPECT CHAGAS DISEASE CASES TO SURPASS THE NUMBER OF HEARTWORM CASES IN TEXAS. RESEARCHERS TELL US THAT AS MANY AS 20 PERCENT OF SHELTER DOGS TEST POSITIVE FOR CHAGAS, AND THE PERCENTAGE IS LIKELY EVEN HIGHER FOR DOGS FROM HUNTING RANCHES. SWESR STARTED TESTING TEXAS RESCUED DOGS FOR CHAGAS IN 2019, OKLAHOMA RESCUED DOGS IN 2022 AND OUR GOAL IS TO TEST ALL INCOMING DOGS AS SOON AS TESTING IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN REGION. CHAGAS INFECTIONS NOW SURPASS HEARTWORM INFECTIONS FOR OUR INCOMING DOGS. SWESR PROVIDES TREATMENT FOR ALL DOGS THAT TEST POSITIVE. WITHOUT TREATMENT, CHAGAS CAN BE DEBILITATING OR FATAL. IN 2014 SWESR STARTED A FUREVER FOSTER PROGRAM ORIENTED SPECIFICALLY TO FIND LONG-TERM, STABLE FOSTER CARE FOR ENGLISH SETTERS THAT MAY NOT BE CANDIDATES FOR ADOPTION DUE TO AGE, DISABILITY OR MEDICAL ISSUES. DOGS IN THIS PROGRAM MAY HAVE A SHORTER LIFE-EXPECTANCY THAN OTHER DOGS OR WOULD BE MOST COMFORTABLE NOT HAVING TO TRANSITION FROM ONE HOME TO ANOTHER BECAUSE OF THEIR DISABILITY OR MEDICAL CONDITION.
HANKS HEARTWORM PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE PURCHASE OF HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE FOR ALL DOGS UNDER SWESR CARES AND PROVIDES FOR HEARTWORM TREATMENT AND RECOVERY FOR ALL HEARTWORM POSITIVE DOGS RESCUED BY SWESR.
