ERIC IS A MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION CONSISTING OF STATE ELECTION OFFICIALS WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF STATE VOTER REGISTRATION LISTS AND EDUCATE ELIGIBLE CITIZENS ON HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE.

TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF AMERICAS VOTING ROLLS, ERIC PROVIDED ITS MEMBERS WITH ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON VOTER REGISTRATION RECORDS THAT WERE INACCURATE OR OUT-OF-DATE DUE TO VOTERS CHANGING RESIDENCES. MEMBERS CONTACTED THESE VOTERS VIA MAIL IN ORDER TO CORRECT THE INACCURACY OR OBTAIN INFORMATION SUFFICIENT TO INACTIVATE OR UPDATE THE VOTERS RECORD. ERIC ALSO PROVIDED INFORMATION ON VOTERS WHO APPEARED TO BE DECEASED BASED ON OFFICIAL DEATH DATA FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION. TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN ELECTIONS, ERIC IDENTIFIED POTENTIALLY ELIGIBLE BUT UNREGISTERED RESIDENTS IN SEVERAL MEMBER STATES. MEMBERS CONTACTED THESE INDIVIDUALS VIA A MAILING THAT INCLUDED INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOW TO BEST REGISTER TO VOTE. THE MAILING INCLUDED THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINES. SUMMARY STATISTICS OF THESE EFFORTS ARE AVAILABLE AT WWW.ERICSTATES.ORG. ADDITIONALLY, THREE STATES JOINED ERIC, INCLUDING MAINE, NEW JERSEY, AND MASSACHUSETTS. AS OF JUNE 30, 2002, 33 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA WERE MEMBERS OF ERIC.
