BOOK HARVEST PROVIDES BOOKS TO CHILDREN WHO NEED THEM AND ENGAGES FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES TO PROMOTE CHILDRENS LIFELONG LITERACY AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS.

BOOK BANK PROVIDES FREE AND EASY ACCESS TO BOOKS TO CHILDREN. BOOKS ARE PROVIDED THROUGH COMMUNITY BOOK BOXES IN EIGHT LOCATIONS AROUND THE COMMUNITY AND IN ALL DURHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN GRADES PRE-K 5 BEFORE THEY LEAVE SCHOOL FOR THE SUMMER TO HELP THEM SUSTAIN THEIR LEARNING GAINS AND SPARK A LOVE OF READING. IN 2021, 44,085 BOOKS WERE SELECTED BY STUDENTS.


EARLY LITERACY AND PRE-K/K PARTNERS WITH FAMILIES THROUGH THE BOOK BABIES PROGRAM TO NURTURE THEIR CHILDRENS EARLY LANGUAGE AND LITERACY SKILLS. AN EVIDENCE-INFORMED HOME VISITING PARTNERSHIP, BOOK BABIES PROVIDES SUPPORT TO ENROLLED FAMILIES THAT BEGINS WHEN A BABY IS BORN AND IS SUSTAINED OVER FIVE YEARS. BOOK BABIES BUILDS RICH RELATIONSHIPS AND PROVIDES FAMILIES WITH THE INFORMATION AND RESOURCES THEY NEED TO DEVELOP THE FOUNDATION FOR THEIR CHILDRENS SCHOOL READINESS AND SCHOOL SUCCESS. IN 2021, 232 BABIES WERE ENROLLED IN BB, THOSE BABIES AND SIBLINGS RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 5,002 BOOKS AND 587 HOME VISITS WERE MADE BY HOME VISITORS.


LEARNING EVERYWHERE: COMMUNITY AND EVENTS CREATES AND PROMOTES A CULTURE OF LITERACY FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN IN COMMUNITY SPACES THEY REGULARLY VISIT. IN 2021, WE GREW OUR PRESENCE IN LAUNDROMATS IN DURHAM, NC, PROVIDING LITERACY RESOURCES IN EIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD LOCATIONS AS WELL AS TWO ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENTS, DREAM BIG ON MLK DAY AND OUR SUMMER BLOCK PARTY. CHILDREN AND FAMILIES HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT AND TAKE HOME AN UNLIMITED NUMBER OF FREE BOOKS FROM BOOKSHELVES DISPLAYED IN COZY READING SPACES IN THE LAUNDROMATS. 5,416 BOOKS WERE PROVIDED.
