Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3

YOUTH MENTORING - MENTORED STUDENTS (MENTEES) ARE REFERRED TO LINDSAY'S LEGACY MENTORING PROGRAM BY COUNSELORS, TEACHERS, SOCIAL WORKERS, OR A PARENT/GUARDIAN. STUDENTS MAY BE GOING THROUGH A DIFFICULT OR CHALLENGING SITUATION AND NEED AN ADDITIONAL CARING ADULT ROLE MODEL. IN THE 2018/2019 SCHOOL YEAR, WE COLLABORATED WITH THREE SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN JACKSON COUNTY TO SERVE 230 STUDENTS IN 18 SCHOOLS. LEGACY MENTORS ARE ADULT ROLE MODELS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO ARE SCREENED AND TRAINED IN EFFECTIVE MENTORING PRACTICES. THE PROGRAM HAD 220 VOLUNTEERS SERVING 230 STUDENTS AS CARING ADULT MENTORS IN LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOL. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE FRIENDSHIP, ENCOURAGEMENT, GUIDANCE, AND COMPANIONSHIP TO A STUDENT IN NEED OF A MENTORING FRIENDSHIP. MENTORS HELP YOUNG PEOPLE ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL AND DISCOVER THEIR STRENGTHS. SCHOOL COUNSELORS FROM PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS CAREFULLY SELECT STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE MENTORS USING REQUEST FROM PARENTS/GUARDIANS, REFERENCES FROM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION, PROFESSIONAL OPINION, AND A RUBRIC AS THEIR GUIDE. POTENTIAL NEW MENTORS MUST ATTEND A TRAINING SESSION, PASS A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, AND AGREE TO SPEND AT LEAST 2 HOURS A MONTH (30 MINUTES EACH WEEK) IN-SCHOOL WITH THEIR STUDENT. WORKING WITH 18 SCHOOLS IN OUR COUNTY PROVIDES MANY CONVENIENT TIME/LOCATION OPTIONS FOR MENTORS AS WELL AS PROVIDING A SAFE PLACE AND ENVIRONMENT FOR MENTORS TO WORK WITH THEIR STUDENTS. WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION BY RECRUITING, ENLISTING, AND TRAINING QUALIFIED MENTORS TO WORK WITH STUDENTS IN LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
