MATCHED SAVINGS FOR EDUCATION: STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO INCOME- QUALIFY ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A 1,3,OR 4-YEAR TUITION SCHOLARSHIP UPON COMPLETING PERSONAL FINANCE TRAINING AND OPENING A FLORIDA 529 SAVINGS ACCOUNT. THE FUNDS - ETLFL MATCHED SAVINGS FOR EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PLUS FLORIDA 529 SAVINGS ACCOUNT - ARE USED FOR TUITION, BOOKS, FEES, AND OTHER APPROVED EDUCATIONAL RELATED EXPENSES AT A FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE, OR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER. SINCE 2016, ETLFL HAS DEMONSTRATED OUTCOMES FOR A NEW APPROACH TO STUDENT DEBT REDUCTION OR ELIMINATION. EARN TO LEARN FL LEVERAGED A MODEST 100,000 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN RESOURCES (ASSETS FOR INDEPENDENCE) GRANT IN 2016 INTO A VIABLE AND SCALABLE PROGRAM. IN 6 YEARS ETLFL HAS RAISED OVER 1.8 MILLION IN INDIVIDUAL CORPORATE, AND ACADEMIC INSTITUTION PHILANTHROPY IN FLORIDA TO PROVIDE ANNUALLY RENEWABLE MATCHED SAVINGS FOR EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS TO 125+ ELIGIBLE STUDENTS, WITH ADDITIONAL FUTURE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS IN INVENTORY PURCHASED AND LEVERAGED THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FLORIDA PREPAID COLLEGE FOUNDATION. IN ADDITION TO SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING, THE ELIGIBLE ETLFL STUDENTS WILL AIM TO SAVE OVER 250,000 TO INVEST IN THEIR EDUCATION THROUGH FL 529 ACCOUNTS, WITH ADDITIONAL 529 SAVINGS INCREASING WITH FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS. ADDITIONAL FUNDING ALLOWS ETLFL TO FURTHER CONTINUE ITS STRONG SUCCESS IN LEVERAGING FUNDS, SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY AND BROADENING THE CURRENT PROGRAM'S SCOPE TO FLORIDA'S OTHER UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTERS.
NEAR PEER COACHING FOR POSTSECONDARY SUCCESS: ETLFL TRAINS AND DEPLOYS NEAR PEER COACHES TO SUPPORT INCOME CHALLENGED STUDENTS IN THE AREAS OF POSTSECONDARY ACCESS, PERSONAL FINANCE TRAINING, AND CAREER PLANNING. NEAR PEER COACHES SUPPORT STUDENT PREPARATION AND SUCCESS STRATEGIES TO SUCCESSFULLY PURSUE THEIR HIGHER EDUCATION. ETLFL RECRUITS, TRAINS, AND DEPLOYS NEAR PEER SUCCESS COACHES (AMERICORPS MEMBERS) TO PROVIDE NEAR-PEER INTERVENTIONS TO DISADVANTAGED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. BY THE END OF EACH PROGRAM YEAR (AUGUST 1 - JULY 31), THE NEAR PEER SUCCESS COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL HIGHER EDUCATION ADVISORY INTERVENTIONS TO STUDENTS TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE 1) PERSONAL FINANCE TRAINING, 2) CAREER PLAN DEVELOPMENT, 3) COLLEGE AND MAJORS LIST DEVELOPMENT, 4) POSTSECONDARY APPLICATION STRATEGY, AND 5) SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID STRATEGY. THE NEAR PEER SUCCESS COACHES ALSO LEVERAGE CAREER GUIDANCE COUNSELORS ENGAGED IN IMPLEMENTING COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIRS, CONDUCTING GROUP WORKSHOPS, AND FACILITATING COLLEGE VISITS TO A BROADER POPULATION OF STUDENTS AT EACH PARTNER SERVICE SITE. EACH YEAR, OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN ETLFL MATCHED SAVINGS FOR EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS ARE OFFERED TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WITH PRIORITY GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN NEAR PEER SUCCESS COACHED. ALL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE PERSONAL FINANCE TRAINING AND OPEN A FL 529 SAVINGS ACCOUNT PRIOR TO THEIR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AND TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH A NEAR PEER SUCCESS COACH AFTER THEIR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD. FOR THE PROGRAM YEAR ENDING JULY 31, 2021 (WITH PROGRAM DEVELOPED AND LAUNCHED DURING PANDEMIC AND ASSOCIATED CHALLENGES), 40 NEAR PEER COACHES SERVING 20 HOURS/WEEK WERE RECRUITED, TRAINED & DEPLOYED ON A VIRTUAL PLATFORM SINCE IN PERSON ACCESS TO HIGH SCHOOLS AND COLLEGE CAMPUSES WAS RESTRICTED. THE RESTRICTIONS CREATED DELAYS IN DEPLOYING NEAR PEER COACHES, WHICH ALSO SEVERELY LIMITED THEIR ABILITY TO COACH STUDENTS.
