BUILDING COMMUNITY AND CULTIVATING LEADERS THROUGH ARTS AND CULTURE

PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL INSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ARTS AND CULTURE FOR 350+ CHILDREN AND YOUTH PER WEEK, IN THE FINE ARTS DISCIPLINES OF MUSIC, DANCE, DRAMA, AND THE VISUAL ARTS, WITH CLASSES 5 DAYS PER WEEK. MAE PARTNERS WITH MANY COMMUNITY GROUPS: A CHARTER SCHOOL, A LOCAL PUEBLO SCHOOL, AND OTHER ARTS GROUPS. MOST STUDENTS ARE AT-RISK AND UNDER-SERVED, WITH A DEPRESSED LOCAL ECONOMY. DURING THE COVID SHUTDOWN, MAE CONTINUED OPERATIONS WITH VIDEO INSTRUCTION.


MAE OPERATES AN ADJACENT SPACE WHICH IS A 6000 SQUARE FOOT THEATER. THE SPACE IS ALSO USED FOR GYMNASTICS CLASSES. MAE RENTS THE THEATER TO OUTSIDE ARTS GROUPS AT LOW COST FOR COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES, AS WELL AS USES THE THEATER FOR ARTS PERFORMANCES FOR ITS ENROLLED STUDENTS, AND STUDENTS OF THE NEARBY CHARTER SCHOOL - LA TIERRA MONTESSORI SCHOOL FOR ARTS AND SCIENCE, AND THE OHKAY OWINGEH DAY SCHOOL. USE WAS LIMITED DURING THE EARLY 2021 COVID SHUTDOWN, BUT IS BACK UP AND RUNNING.


MAE TEAMS WITH HELP NM AND FARMERS TO PROVIDE HEALTHY VEGETARIAN MEALS EVERY DAY FOR ALL ENROLLED STUDENTS. SIBLINGS, PARENTS, AND CARE-GIVERS ARE ALSO SERVED IF THEY WISH TO EAT. FOOD IS OBTAINED FROM LOCAL FARMERS, FARM COOPERATIVES, OR DONATIONS WHEN POSSIBLE. HELP NEW MEXICO, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE USDA, PROVIDES PARTIAL REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE MEALS FOR STUDENTS.
