Part 3 - Line 4a
SACRED HEART MINOR SEMINARY (SHS) IN GULU, UGANDA, AND ARCHBISHOP FLYNN SECONDARY SCHOOL (AFSS) IN PADER, UGANDA, REMAINED LOCKED DOWN FOR MOST OF THE YEAR DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC FEARS. THE STUDENTS SUFFERED TREMENDOUSLY FROM NOT BEING IN SCHOOL. THE GOVERNMENT ATTEMPTED TO PROVIDE REMOTE LEARNING THAT REQUIRED ACCESS TO COMPUTERS, THE INTERNET, AND RADIOS. ALL OF THESE OPTIONS REQUIRE ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY, WHICH IS ONLY MARGINALLY AVAILABLE IN URBAN AREAS IN NORTHERN UGANDA. VERY FEW SHS AND AFSS STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY, COMPUTERS, AND THE INTERNET IN THEIR HOMES, SO LEARNING WAS SEVERELY LIMITED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. BY THE END OF THE YEAR, THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED THAT SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN UGANDA WILL RE-OPEN IN JANUARY 2022. HOPE FOR UGANDA BENEFACTORS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO RETAIN THE TEACHERS AND STAFF BY CONTINUING SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOLS WHILE NO TUITION WAS BEING COLLECTED. FUNDS WERE ALSO SENT TO SHS TO RENOVATE AN UNSAFE CLASSROOM FOR STUDENTS AND PURCHASE FOOD FOR THE COMING YEAR. FUNDS WERE SENT TO AFSS TO PURCHASE FOOD FOR THE COMING YEAR, REPAIR A PICK-UP, COMPLETE A LAND SURVEY OF THE CAMPUS, AND CONTINUE CONSTRUCTION OF A PRIEST RESIDENCE AND GUEST HOUSE. HFU SENT FUNDS TO HELP THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GULU PURCHASE 3 MOTORCYCLES/MASS KITS/CHASUBLES FOR THE NEWLY ORDAINED PRIESTS, AND MADE A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN THE RENOVATION OF THE NEONATAL FACILITIES AT ST. MARY'S LACOR HOSPITAL IN GULU. THE HFU BOARD RAISED THE MONEY NEEDED TO PLANT CROPS ON 130 ACRES OF THE 262 ACRES OF FARMLAND PURCHASED NEAR AFSS IN 2017. THE FOLLOWING CROPS WERE GROWN AND HARVESTED IN 2021: CORN, EDIBLE BEANS, RICE, SUNFLOWER (FOR COOKING OIL), CASSAVA, AND VARIOUS GARDEN VEGETABLES. HFU HAS INVESTED IN EQUIPMENT TO BE USED ON THE AFSS FARM INCLUDING A TRACTOR, PLOW, AND DISC, AND PURCHASED TWO MOTORCYCLES FOR FARM STAFF. HFU BENEFACTORS ARE RAISING FUNDS FOR A BASIC ROAD SYSTEM FOR THE FARM AND STRUCTURES FOR CROP PROCESSING AND STORAGE. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR OF 2021, HOPE FOR UGANDA FUNDED GRANT REQUESTS OF MORE THAN $550,000 TO HELP SHS, AFSS, THE FARM, AND THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GULU.
