WALKER WEST MUSIC ACADEMY CREATES A MUSIC LEARNING COMMUNITY ROOTED IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCE, WHERE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS CAN GATHER, EXPLORE AND GROW THROUGH MUSIC, BY PROVIDING LESSONS ON VARIOUS INSTRUMENTS.

WE WERE OPEN FOR LESSONS 280 DAYS AND SERVED 328 UNDUPLICATED STUDENTS IN OUR WEEKLY PRIVATE LESSON/ENSEMBLE/GROUP INSTRUCTION PROGRAM. INSTRUMENTS FOR INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION INCLUDE PIANO, GUITAR, BASS, WIND INSTRUMENTS, VOICE, PERCUSSION, ORGAN, VIOLIN, VIOLA AND CELLO. AT THE COMPLETION OF EACH SESSION, A RECITAL IS GIVEN SO THAT STUDENTS CAN SHARE WHAT THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. THE RECITALS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND ANYONE WISHING TO ATTEND. PRIVATE LESSON STUDENTS ARE AGES 5 AND OLDER. OUR JAZZ ENSEMBLES REHEARSE WEEKLY AND PERFORM FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS SUCH AS JUNETEENTH, NATIONAL NIGHT OUT, SELBY JAZZ FEST AND TWIN CITIES JAZZ FEST. THERE IS ONE ADULT JAZZ ENSEMBLE AND THREE YOUTH JAZZ ENSEMBLES. THE KAMOINGE STRING ENSEMBLE WHICH CONSISTS OF PRIVATE LESSONS STUDENTS PREPARE SELECTIONS TO PERFORM AT COMMUNITY EVENTS. IN NOVEMBER 2021, OUR THREE YOUTH JAZZ ENSEMBLES AND THE KAMOINGE STRING ENSEMBLE PERFORMED AT THE LANDMARK CENTER FOR THEIR SUNDAYS AT LANDMARK CONCERT SERIES. OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC PROGRAM SERVES STUDENTS AGES 0 - 6. CAREGIVERS AND CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY GROUP MUSIC ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND SCHOOL READINESS. APPROXIMATELY 40 PERCENT OF OUR PRIVATE, GROUP AND ENSEMBLE STUDENTS RECEIVED TUITION ASSISTANCE IN 2021.
