OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE CIVIL LEGAL SERVICE TO LOW-INCOME CLIENTS. OUR LEGAL SERVICES PROVIDE BASIC PROTECTION FOR OUR CLIENTS BY ENFORCING THE LAW WHEN THEIR RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED, PROMOTE THE SELF-SUFFICIENCY OF INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT OUR REGION, AND EDUCATE AND INFORM OUR COMMUNITY RESIDENTS OF THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

LASNEM HAS FIVE OFFICES: DULUTH, PINE CITY, BRAINERD, GRAND RAPIDS AND VIRGINIA. OUR FIRM SERVICES THE NORTHEAST ELEVEN COUNTIES IN MINNESOTA, STRETCHING FROM PINE AND KANABEC COUNTIES, NORTH TO AITKIN, PART OF CASS, CROW WING, ITASCA, AND KOOCHICHING, AND EAST TO BORDER OF THE STATE THROUGH CARLTON, ST. LOUIS, LAKE, AND COOK COUNTIES. OUR FULL-TIME STAFF ATTORNEYS ARE FOCUSED ON THE GREATEST LEVEL OF NEED WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SYSTEMIC AND COMMUNITY IMPACT THROUGH FULL REPRESENTATION OF CLIENTS. OUR GUIDING PRIORITY PRINCIPLES ARE AS FOLLOWS: PROMOTING FAMILY SAFETY, STABILITY, AND WELL BEING; PRESERVATION OR ACQUISITION OF SHELTER AND RELATED SHELTER NEEDS; MAINTAINING, ENHANCING, AND PROTECTING INCOME AND ECONOMIC SECURITY; PROMOTING DIGNITY, SECURITY, AND INDEPENDENCE FOR THE OLDER ADULTS. IN 2021, THE LEGAL AID STAFF SERVED 8,408 PEOPLE IN DIRECT CASE LEGAL SERVICES. LEGAL SERVICES PERFORMED PROTECTED 132,460 IN ASSETS, AND RECOVERED 251,703 IN ASSETS FOR OUR CLIENTS. THE PAI(PRIVATE ATTORNEY INVOLVEMENT) PROGRAM OPENED 492 CASES IN 2021. OUR ATTORNEYS REGULARLY PERFORM OUTREACH AND CLINICS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS, AND WE ENGAGED WITH MORE THAN 1,400 INDIVIDUALS DURING THIS PROGRAMMING. IN 2021, NEARLY 45% OF OUR CASES CLOSED HELPED INDIVIDUALS WITH FAMILY LAW MATTERS, AND ANOTHER 31% OF OUR CASES CLOSED HELPED INDIVIDUALS WITH HOUSING MATTERS. LEGAL AID HAS PROJECT RESOURCES FOR HOUSING QUALITY, COORDINATED ENTRY FOR HOMELESSNESS, AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS FOR OLDER ADULTS AND NATIVE AMERICANS.
