TO PROVIDE PUBLIC PROTECTION AND PROMOTE QUALITY SERVICES THROUGH CERTIFICATION OF PROFESSIONALS ENGAGING IN THE PREVENTION OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND OTHER DRUG PROBLEMS AND THE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF ADDICTIONS.

CERTIFICATIONS: THE MICHIGAN CERTIFICATION BOARD FOR ADDICTION PROFESSIONALS (MCBAP) IS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION AND RECIPROCITY CONSORTIUM (IC&RC), AND THE MOST ACTIVE AUTHORITY FOR PROFESSIONAL SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND RECOVERY CREDENTIALING IN MICHIGAN. THE IC&RC RECIPROCAL CERTIFICATIONS MCBAP CURRENTLY OFFERS: CERTIFIED ADVANCED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR (CAADC), CERTIFIED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR (CADC), CERTIFIED CLINICAL SUPERVISOR (CCS), CERTIFIED PREVENTION SPECIALIST (CPS), CERTIFIED PREVENTION CONSULTANT - RECIPROCAL (CPC-R), CERTIFIED PEER RECOVERY MENTOR (CPRM). CERTIFICATION IS RECIPROCAL WITH OTHER IC&RC MEMBER BOARDS THAT OFFER THE ABOVE NOTED CREDENTIALS. SIMILAR, OLDER, NON-RECIPROCAL CREDENTIALS ARE ALSO RECOGNIZED IN MICHIGAN, MAINLY FOR PROFESSIONALS WHO GAINED THEIR CREDENTIALS BEFORE OCTOBER 2008.


TESTING & EXAMS: IC&RC EXAMS - QUALIFYING EXAMS FOR MCBAP/IC&RC CREDENTIALS INCLUDE ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR (ADC), ADVANCED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR (AADC), PREVENTION SPECIALIST (PS), CLINCIAL SUPERVISION (CCS), AND PEER RECOVERY (PR). EXAMS ARE TAKEN IN COMPUTER-BASED TESTING FORMAT AT A TESTING CENTER. MAFE EXAMS - MCBAP OFFERS A STATE-LIMITED EXAMINATION TITLED, MICHIGAN ADDICTION FUNDAMENTALS EXAMINATION (MAFE). THIS EXAM IS AN ENTRY LEVEL EXAMINATION BASED ON THE CENTER FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PUBLICATION (SAMSHA), TAP 21 ADDICTION COUNSELING COMPENTENCIES: THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTITUDES OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE (2002). PREPARATION FOR THE MAFE MAY BENEFIT ANY PERSON FROM ENTRY LEVEL TO SEASONED PROFESSIONAL. IT IS COMMONLY USED AS AN ENTRY LEVEL EXAM FOR NEW PROFESSIONALS WITH LIMITED BACKGROUND IN SUBSTANCE-USE DISORDERS AND ADDICTION.


DEVELOPMENT PLANS: PEOPLE BECOMING EMPLOYED AT A LICENSED PROGRAM PROVIDING SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER SERVICES, BUT DO NOT YET HOLD THE SPECIALITY CERTIFICATION FROM MCBAP THAT IS REQUIRED UNDER A STATE OF MICHIGAN FUNDED CONTRACT, STATE LICENSING, BY ANOTHER PAYER SOURCE OR QUALITY ASSURANCE SOURCE, OR EMPLOYER THAT REQUIRES IT. AN APPROVED MCBAP REGISTERED DEVELOPMENT PLAN IS A TIME-LIMITED, ONE-TIME OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN EMPLOYMENT IN THESE SERVICES PRIOR TO HAVING COMPLETED THE NEEDED PROFESSIONAL SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION. THE PLAN IS AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN EMPLOYEE AND THEIR EMPLOYER.
