THE LIVING COAST DISCOVERY CENTER INSPIRES THE COMMUNITY TO CONNECT WITH AND CARE FOR OUR COASTAL ENVIRONMENT. THE LIVING COAST DISCOVERY CENTER'S VISION IS A THRIVING NATURAL COAST THROUGH ENGAGED CONSERVATION.

FOR OVER 30 YEARS, THE LIVING COAST DISCOVERY CENTER HAS PROVIDED A LIVING INTERPRETIVE EXPERIENCE WHILE PROMOTING COASTAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND ENVIROMENTAL STWARDSHIP THROUGH EDUCATION. AS AN EDUCATIONAL ZOO AND AQUARIUM, THE LIVING COAST FEATURES LOCAL WILDLIFE AND PLANTS AND PROVIDES A UNIQUE LOCATION FOR GUESTS AND STUDENTS TO EXPLORE NATURE TRAILS, LEARN ABOUT COASTAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION, AND EXPERIENCE WILDLIFE UP-CLOSE. IN A TYPICAL YEAR, THE LIVING COAST WELCOMES CLOSE TO 80,000 VISITORS, INCLUDING OVER 29,000 K-12 STUDENTS, WHO EXPERINCE THESE EXCITING PROGRAMS. THROUGH LIVING LAB FIELD TRIPS, OUR WILD SAN DIEGO OUTREACH PROGRAMS, AND WILDLIFE DAY CAMPS, THE LIVING COAST SEEKS TO INSTILL AN EARLY AWARENESS OF OUR COASTAL RESOURCES BY INSPIRING STUDENTS THROUGH INTERACTIONS WITH WILDLIFE AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES.ANIMAL AMBASSADORS ARE CENTRAL TO EVERY ENVIROMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM CONDUCTED AT THE LIVING COAST DISCOVERY CENTER. THE LIVING COAST FEATURES ANIMALS THAT ARE NATIVE TO THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGION AND MANY OF THE ANIMALS ARE INJURED OR IMPRINTED (RELIANT ON HUMAN CARE) AND CANNOT BE RELEASED INTO THE WILD. ENVIRONMENTAL LESSONS COME ALIVE AS VISITIORS VIEW THE EXHIBITS OF AVIAN (SHOREBIRDS, OWLS, AND EAGLES), AQUATIC (SHARKS, FISH AND SEA TURTLES), AND TERRESTRIAL SPECIES (TORTOISES, SNAKES AND POSSUMS). AS PART OF ITS CONSERVATION PROGRAM, THE LIVING COAST IS PROUD TO BE PART OF TEAM CLAPPER RAIL, COMPOSED OF ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO THE STUDY, RESTORATION AND REINTRODUCTION OF THE STATE AND FEDERALLY-LISTED ENDANGERED SPECIES LIGHT-FOOTED RIDGWAYS RAIL IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. ADDITIONALLY, THE ANIMAL CARE TEAM PROVIDES DAILY HUSBANDRY AND ENRICHMENT FOR THE HUNDREDS OF ANIMAL AMBASSADORS THAT CALL THE LIVING COAST HOME.
