THE MUSEUM IS A NONPROFIT CALIFORNIA CORPORATION INCORPORATED ON JULY 22, 1996. AS AN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE ART OF CALIFORNIA, ITS PURPOSE IS TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF ART AND ARTISTS IN AMERICAN CULTURE THROUGH COLLECTION, EXHIBITION, RESEARCH AND INSTRUCTION. THE FOCUS OF THE MUSEUM COLLECTION IS ON THE ART OF CALIFORNIA AND RELATED WORKDS FROM THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES WITH AN EMPHASIS OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
