Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE SAN DIEGO EARLY MUSIC SOCIETY (SDEMS) FOSTERS THE APPRECIATION AND PERFORMANCE OF EARLY MUSIC (MUSIC WRITTEN BEFORE 1800) IN THE GREATER SAN DIEGO AREA THROUGH CONCERTS AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS. SDEMS SEEKS TO DIVERSIFY AND ENHANCE CULTURAL LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY BY PRESENTING OUTSTANDING CONCERTS BY INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED MUSICIANS. EARLY MUSIC IS AN IMPORTANT BRANCH OF THE WESTERN CULTURAL TRADITION THAT IS UNDERSERVED BY MAINSTREAM MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS IN SAN DIEGO. SDEMS PERFORMANCES OFTEN FEATURE THE USE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICES APPROPRIATE TO THE PERIOD IN WHICH THE MUSIC WAS COMPOSED. THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE ALWAYS A FOCAL POINT OF SDEMS PERFORMANCES.DURING THE 2022-2023 SEASON, THE SDEMS PRESENTED SEVEN MAIN SEASON CONCERTS FEATURING INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS IN TWO SAN DIEGO CITIES. FOUR OF THESE CONCERTS WERE REVIEWED FAVORABLY BY SAN DIEGO CRITICS IN TWO MAJOR PUBLICATIONS (THE OTHER CONCERTS WERE NOT REVIEWED). THE SDEMS ALSO HOSTED SIX OUTREACH EVENTS IN MULTIPLE CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTY, SERVING DOZENS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND STUDENTS AND EMPLOYING LOCAL ARTISTS AS WELL AS VISITING ARTISTS. THESE EVENTS WERE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND SET UP IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES, AND LOCAL ARTS INSTITUTIONS. THIS SEASON, THE SDEMS HOSTED ITS FIRST-EVER SAN DIEGO EARLY MUSIC SHOWCASE, A FREE EVENT FEATURING LOCAL ENSEMBLES THAT INCLUDED PERFORMERS OF ALL LEVELS, FROM MIDDLE- AND HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS AT THE START OF THEIR MUSIC CAREERS TO WELL-ESTABLISHED ARTISTS. THIS ONE-DAY EVENT WAS FREE TO THE PUBLIC AND GENERATED A LOT OF INTEREST AND ATTENTION AMONG NEW PATRONS. ATTENDANCE TO ALL EVENTS MET EXPECTATIONS AT 75% CAPACITY AND ABOVE.
