SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON (SMB) PERFORMED 85 LIVE CONCERTS AND PROVIDED 5 CONCERT VIDEOS VIA OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL IN 2023 ACROSS OUR PARTNER SITES. OUR PROGRAM SITES LAST YEAR INCLUDED BEDFORD VETERANS' QUARTERS IN BEDFORD, CASPAR EMERGENCY SHELTER IN CAMBRIDGE, HOMEOWNER'S REHAB INC. IN CAMBRIDGE, HOUSING FAMILIES IN MALDEN, PINE STREET INN'S STABILIZATION PROGRAM IN JAMAICA PLAIN, SONESTA HOTEL IN WOBURN, SOUTHAMPTON STREET SHELTER IN BOSTON, VICTORY PROGRAMS IN DORCHESTER, AND WOODS MULLEN SHELTER IN BOSTON - ALL IN MASSACHUSETTS FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN IN NEED.SMB'S 2023 JULIE LEVEN ARTISTIC PROJECT, SONGS OF LIFE, UNFOLDED IN TWO PARTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN JANUARY, OUR STRING QUARTET PERFORMED MUSIC THAT EVOKED THE FEELINGS OF JOY, SADNESS, PEACE, AND HOPE FOR THE MUSICIANS THEMSELVES AND INVITED AUDIENCE MEMBERS TO SHARE THE MUSIC THAT DID THE SAME FOR THEM IN THEIR LIVES. WE RECEIVED A DELIGHTFULLY WIDE RANGE OF ANSWERS AND THE NEXT PHASE OF THE PROJECT BEGAN. SMB'S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR SELECTED FOUR ORIGINAL SONGS SUGGESTED BY OUR AUDIENCES (ONE FOR EACH EMOTION) AND COMMISSIONED FOUR PROFESSIONAL COMPOSERS TO WRITE NEW CLASSICAL PIECES INSPIRED BY THESE UNEXPECTED ORIGINAL WORKS. THE PROGRAM PREMIERED IN SEPTEMBER AT OUR PARTNER SITES AND IN A PUBLIC CONCERT.THE IMPACT OF OUR CONCERTS CONTINUED TO BE CLOSELY TRACKED AND ANALYZED THROUGH POST-CONCERT SURVEYS AND DOCUMENTED COMMENTS THAT PROVIDE VALUABLE FEEDBACK ON OUR MISSION AND EXECUTION. BEFORE OUR SEPTEMBER 2023 CONCERT, A LISTENER AT WOODS MULLEN SHELTER FOR WOMEN TOLD US, "I WAS HAVING A DAY OF DESPAIR." AFTER THE CONCERT, HOWEVER, "I FELT SO SPIRITED AND AWAKE WITH THE JOY I NEEDED." PROVIDING THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS TO LISTENERS SUCH AS THIS ONE HAS GUIDED OUR PROGRAM THROUGHOUT LAST YEAR AND IS AT THE CENTER OF THE WORK WE DO.
