THE ASSOCIATION OF TRIBAL ARCHIVES, LIBRARIES, AND MUSEUMS IS ORGANIZED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. IT PROVIDES CULTURALLY RELEVANT TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SERVICES TO PRESERVE AND ADVANCE THE LANGUAGE, HISTORY, CULTURE, AND LIFEWAYS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.

IN SEPTEMBER 2021, ATALM RECEIVED A $3,612,326 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES THROUGH THE "SUSTAINING THE HUMANITIES THROUGH THE AMERICAN RECOVERY PLAN" (SHARP) PROGRAM,. OVER THE COURSE OF TWO YEARS, ATALM WILL DISTRIBUTE $3,250,000 TO HELP NATIVE CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS EMERGE FROM THE PANDEMIC. SPECIFICALLY, GRANT FUNDS SUPPORT STAFF RETENTION, GENERAL OPERATIONS, HUMANITIES-BASED PROGRAMMING, AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES. EIGHTY-FOUR NATIVE CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTING 25 STATES RECEIVED FUNDING, WHICH WAS AWARDED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE PEER-REVIEW APPLICATION PROCESS. AWARDS RANGE FROM $5,000 TO $50,000. GRANT RECIPIENTS MAY REQUEST FUNDS MONTHLY, AT WHICH TIME ATALM DRAWS DOWN FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. AT THE TIME OF THIS FILING, THE JUNE REIMBURSEMENT WAS NOT RECEIVED FROM NEH BEFORE THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR.


IN MARCH, ATALM RECEIVED $250,000 FROM THE MELLON FOUNDATION TO ESTABLISH THE "GOING HOME: RETURNING MATERIAL CULTURE TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES PROJECT", A PROGRAM THAT WILL HELP FACILITATE THE RETURN ITEMS OF CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE TO TRIBAL MUSEUMS AND/OR CULTURAL CENTERS. THE PROGRAM WILL LAUNCH IN AUGUST OF 2022 AND TO DATE NO EXPENSES HAVE BEEN INCURRED.


DORIS DUKE NATIVE ORAL HISTORY PROJECT: FROM 1966-1975, DORIS DUKE PROVIDED FUNDING TO SEVEN UNIVERSITIES TO COLLECT 6,500 ORAL HISTORIES FROM INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES. RECOGNIZING THE HIGH VALUE OF THE MATERIALS HELD WITHIN THE COLLECTIONS, THE DORIS DUKE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION HAS APPOINTED THE ASSOCIATION OF TRIBAL ARCHIVES, LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS (ATALM) TO SERVE AS THE NATIONAL COORDINATOR TO WORK WITH THE SEVEN UNIVERSITIES AND NATIVE COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE ACCESS TO THE COLLECTIONS, PROVIDE THE ORIGINATING COMMUNITIES WITH COPIES OF ALL MATERIALS COLLECTED, ENSURE PROPER CARE OF THE ORIGINAL MATERIALS; AND PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE USE OF THE COLLECTIONS.
