Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
BARRIO DOGS HAS WORKED IN HOUSTON'S EAST END SINCE 2010 TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THIS COMMUNITY'S PERSISTENT ANIMAL WELFARE CONCERNS INCLUDING OVERPOPULATION, NEGLECT AND ABUSE. WE TACKLE THESE CONCERNS BY INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH AT SCHOOLS, SPEAKING WITH FAMILIES AT OUR FREE SPAY NEUTER EVENTS AND CREATING LEADERS THROUGH OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ADVOCACY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
OUR BARRIO DOGS FIXIT PROGRAM HAS SERVED ALMOST 5,000 PETS IN HOUSTON'S EAST END SINCE 2013. WE SPONSOR FREE SPAY NEUTER SURGERIES, VACCINATIONS, AND MICROCHIPS, AS WELL AS EMERGENCY CARE FOR PET OWNERS WHO LACK THESE RESOURCES AND ACCESS TO VET CARE. OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS ARE ESSENTIAL IN SPREADING AWARENESS AND PROVIDING PET OWNERS WITH ADDITIONAL RESOURCES LIKE HEALTHY PET FOOD, LEASHES AND EDUCATIONAL LITERATURE IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH. WE FEEL THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR OUR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY THAT WILL BENEFIT OUR PETS AND THE RESIDENTS.
OUR BARRIO DOGS YOUTH & PAWS PROGRAM (YAP) TEACHES CHILDREN COMPASSION AND RESPECT FOR OUR ANIMALS. THE PROGRAM GOES INTO AREA SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY CENTERS TO TEACH YOUNG CHILDREN ABOUT ANIMALS, OFTEN WITH A THERAPY DOG TO DEMONSTRATE PROPER PET CARE. WE FEEL TEACHING YOUNG STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER PET CARE, AND ESPECIALLY TO SPAY NEUTER THEIR PETS, IS KEY TO HELPING THEM BE BETTER PET OWNERS IN THE FUTURE. THIS PROGRAM IS A KEY INVESTMENT WITH OUR YOUTH AND A GREAT WAY TO HELP CREATE A MORE PET-FRIENDLY FUTURE.
