TO SUPPORT AND GUIDE A COMMUNITY MANAGED TRAIL, THE ALANUI AUPUNI (WHICH IN IS PART THE ALA KAHAKAI NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL) THAT HONORS THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE AND PERPETUATES FOR THOSE TO FOLLOW WITH PROTOCOLS AND RESPECT FOR HAWAII'S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.

ACQUISITION OF 1300 ACRES AT KAUMAMANO FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROTECTING THE TRAIL AND CULTURAL SITES AS WELL AS ON LANDS FURTHER ON THE TRAIL. THE LAND WAS SLATED FOR DEVELOPMENT WHICH WOULD HAVE FOREVER CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE AND THE TRAIL VIEW PLANE. THE LANDOWNER WAS NOT INTERESTED IN PORTIONING OUT A A CONSERVATION EASEMENT. WE HAD TO PURCHASE THE ENTIRE PARCEL IN ORDER TO PROTECT AND MANAGE THE TRAIL.


CONDUCTED COMMUNITY MEETINGS IN KAU, HAWAII TO GET FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY ON HOW BEST TOO PROCEED WITH THE MANAGEMENT AND PROTECTION OF OUR ACQUIRED LANDS. THESE MEETINGS WERE THE FOUNDATION FOR THE MANAGEMENT PLANS BEING DRAFTED FOR APPROVAL.


STEWARDSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FOR ALL OF THE ACQUIRED LANDS IN KAU, HAWAII. THE STEWARDSHIP FOR THIS YEAR INCLUDED MEETINGS WITH STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE. HIKES TO ASSESS CULTURAL SITES, MONITORING USAGE OF THE AREA ALONG THE TRAIL FOR CAMPERS, FIRE MANAGEMENT AS THE AREA IS VERY ARID AND OCCASIONAL FIRES HAVE BROKEN OUT THAT NEEDED COUNTY FIRE FIGHTERS AND THEN ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY FIRES, ACCESS MANAGEMENT BASELINE SURVEYS


BASE LINE SURVEYS AS REQUIRED BY COUNTY FUNDING TO ENSURE THE STATE OF THE PROPERTY UPON PURCHASE AND TO MONITOR ANY CHANGES F ROM THIS SURVEY FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
