A PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY OF THE FOUNDATION IS TO CIRCULATE WORKS OF ART ON A CONTINUING BASIS TO MUSEUMS FOR PUBLIC EXAMINATION AND DISPLAY, THE USE BY TEACHERS, SCHOLARS AND OTHERS FOR STUDY OF ART AND CULTURE, AND TO MAKE THE COLLECTION AND ARCHIVES ASSESSABLE FOR RESEARCH.THE FOUNDATION MANAGES THE KENNETH NOLAND ARCHIVES AND ASSISTS STUDENTS, MUSEUM DOCENTS AND RESEARCHERS WITH EMAIL INQUIRIES FOR SCHOOL RESEARCH, MUSEUM TOURS THAT INCLUDE WORK BY KENNETH NOLAND AND ARTISTS IN THE FOUNDATION COLLECTION, AS WELL AS HOSTING VISITING SCHOLARS FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES.THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO PARTICPATE IN DISCUSSIONS AND WORKSHOPS WITH OTHER FOUNDATIONS AS ORGANIZED BY THE ASPEN INSTITUTE AS WELL AS OTHER ARTIST-ENDOWED-FOUNDATIONS IN THE STATE OF MAINE.


THE FOUNDATION MAINTAINS AN EXHIBITION SPACE IN PORT CLYDE, MAINE. IN ADDITION TO OUTGOING LOANS OF ARTWORK, THE FOUNDATION MOUNTS EXHIBITIONS FROM THE COLLECTION, WHICH INCLUDES WORKS BY KENNETH NOLAND AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019, THE FOUNDATION HAD INSTALLED KENNETH NOLAND: THE GULLY YEARS AN EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTING THE YEARS 1963-1978 WHEN NOLAND ESTABLISHED A HOME AND STUDIO IN SOUTH SHAFTSBURY, VERMONT KNOWN AS "THE GULLY", WHICH BECAME A SITE FOR PAINTING, DRAWING AND SCULPTURE FOR ARTISTS CONNECTED WITH NEARBY BENNINGTON COLLEGE. THE EXHIBITION INCLUDED WORKS BY JULES OLITSKI , HELEN FRANKENTHALER, CRITIC CLEMENT GREENBERG, SIR ANTHONY CARO, DAVID SMITH, LARRY POONS, ISAAC WITKIN, AND WILLIAM NOLAND AMONG OTHERS. DUE TO COVID 19 THE FOUNDATION WAS ONLY ABLE TO SHOW THIS EXHIBITION BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. THE EXHIBITION WILL BE ON DISPLAY UNTIL AUGUST OF 2022.


THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES WORK TO ASSURE THAT THE ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH MATERIALS ARE CONTINUALLY ORGANIZED AND MAINTAINED IN A SCHOLAR FRIENDLY MANNER.THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO SERVE AS A RESOURCE TO THE LOCAL ART COMMUNITY AS A MODEL FACILITY FOR ARCHIVAL STORAGE, FIELDING TECHNICAL QUESTIONS REGARDING ARCHIVAL STORAGE SYSTEMS AND APPROACHES.


THE FOUNDATION ASSISTED WITH MANY SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS AND RESEARCH ESSAYS IN 2021. BELOW IS A PARTIAL LISTING OF SOME OF THE FOUNDATION'S ASSISTANCE:>ALEX GRIMLEY, KENNETH NOLAND: CONTEXT IS THE KEY, PAINTINGS 1958-1970. EXHIBITION CATALOG FOR YARES GALLERY, NEW YORK 2021>ALEX RAPPOPORT, WITH PETER BRADLEY, A DOCUMENTARY ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN PAINTER AND SCULPTOR, PETER BRADLEY WHO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN ORGANIZING THE DE LUXE SHOW IN HOUSTON IN 1971 >AMERICANS IN PARIS: ARTISTS WORKING IN POSTWAR FRANCE, 1946-1962. THE GREY ART GALLERY AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY. THE FOUNDATION ASSISTED IN RESEARCH FOR THIS UPCOMING 296 PAGE ILLUSTRATED PUBLICATION TO ACCOMPANY THE EXHIBITION. THE FOUNDATION MAINTAINS AN OPEN DOOR TO ANY AND ALL INQUIRIES FROM SCHOLARS, SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES, GALLERIES, AUCTION HOUSES, COLLECTORS AND ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON WORKS IN THE FOUNDATION'S COLLECTIONS OR MAY BENEFIT FROM THE ARCHIVES.
