TO REBUILD THE LIVES OF VETERANS AFFECTED BY SPINAL CORD DYSFUNCTION; ADVOCATING AT ALL LEVELS FOR HEALTH, EDUCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY; SEEKING TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH DIRECT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES.

MEMBERSHIP AND BENEFITS PUBLISHING - ZIA CHAPTER PUBLISHES A PERIODIC NEWSLETTER, THE ZIA ROADRUNNER, WITH A CIRCULATION OF APPROXIMATELY 850 COPIES. MEMBER SERVICES - ZIA CHAPTER PROVIDES COMPUTER ACCESS AND EDUCATION, INFORMATION, HOSPITAL VISITS AND SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES TO ITS MEMBERS. ZIA CHAPTER ALSO SUPPORTS THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERAN AFFAIRS VOLUNTARY SERVICE (VAVS), A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES VOLUNTEER SUPPORT FOR ALL ASPECTS OF THE ALBUQUERQUE VETERANS AFFAIRS HOSPITAL OPERATION. ZIA CHAPTER'S PRIMARY FOCUS IS ASSISTING VETERANS WITH SPINAL CORD DYSFUNCTION. ZIA CHAPTER ALSO PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO DISABLED NON-VETERANS AND NON- DISABLED VETERANS.


PUBLIC AFFAIRS ADVOCACY - ZIA CHAPTER ASSISTS WITH WORKSHOPS, PARTICIPATES IN PUBLIC FORUMS, PROVIDES PEER COUNSELING, AND DISSEMINATES LITERATURE AND OTHER DATA TO ENLIGHTEN THE DISABLED ABOUT THEIR SPECIFIC DISABILITIES AND THEIR RIGHTS AS DISABLED CITIZENS. ZIA CHAPTER IS INVOLVED WITH MANY COMMUNITY CHAPTERS INCLUDING THE ALBUQUERQUE VETERAN'S HOSPITAL, THE VETERANS INTEGRATED SUPPORT NETWORK (VISN 18), AND NUMEROUS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEES THROUGHOUT NEW MEXICO. ZIA CHAPTER ALSO CONSULTS WITH BUSINESSES AND GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES REGARDING COMPLIANCE WITH THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT AND OTHER DISABILITY-RELATED LAWS. LEGISLATIVE - ZIA CHAPTER PROVIDES RESEARCH AND DEMOGRAPHIC AND STATISTICAL INFORMATION TO MEMBERS WHO TESTIFY AT PUBLIC HEARINGS AND MEET WITH LEGISLATORS. SPORTS - ZIA CHAPTER SUPPORTS WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL, SKIING, TRAP SHOOTING, HUNTING, FISHING, AND OTHER SPORTS ACTIVITIES OF ITS MEMBERS. FUNDING ASSISTS WITH TOURNAMENT ENTRY FEES, UNIFORMS, AND EQUIPMENT AND TRAVEL EXPENSES.


RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ZIA CHAPTER SUPPORTS SEVERAL RESEARCH PROJECTS, MANAGES AND CONTRIBUTES FUNDS TO A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR VAVS, AND ASSISTS WITH TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR VETERANS AFFAIRS THERAPISTS AND OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO PARTICIPATE IN TRAINING SEMINARS ON SPINAL CORD DYSFUNCTION.
