THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO SUPPORT AMATEUR ATHLETICISM IN NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA. THE FOCAL POINT OF THE ORGANIZATION'S ACTIVITIES IS THE SPONSORSHIP OF A 26.2-MILE MARATHON. THE EVENT HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS A CERTIFIED OLYMPIC QUALIFYING COURSE BY THE USATF AND SERVES AS A QUALIFIER FOR A NUMBER OF OTHER AMATEUR MARATHON EVENTS. THE EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING INDIVIDUALS THAT COMPETE IN THE WHEELCHAIR DIVISION OF THE RACE. THE LAYOUT OF THE COURSE IS DESIGNED TO HIGHLIGHT THE CULTURAL AND HISTORIC ASPECTS OF THE LACKAWANNA VALLEY OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA BY HIGHLIGHING SEVERAL AREAS OF HISTORIC AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE IN THE TOWNS LOCATED ALONG THE RACE COURSE. THE ORGANIZATION STRIVES TO FOSTER AND PROMOTE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY MEANS OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE. THE NET PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO ST. JOSEPH'S CENTER WHICH IS A SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT CARES FOR MEDICALLY FRAGILE CHILDREN.

DUE TO COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS, THE 2021 MARATHON WAS CANCELLED. DUE TO THE GENEROSITY OF SPONSORS AND RUNNERS, A DISTRIBUTION TO ST. JOSEPH'S CENTER WAS STILL POSSIBLE FROM CONTRIBUTIONS COLLECTED.
