SONS OF THE FLAG IS REVOLUTIONIZING BURN CARE FOR VETERANS, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND FAMILIES.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

MISSION: RECONSTRUCT FREEDOM: ACUTE BURN CARE FOR BURNED MILITARY PERSONNEL, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND FAMILIES IS EXCELLENT IN THE U.S. AND CONSIDERED THE BEST IN THE WORLD. HOWEVER, ONCE SURVIVAL FROM A BURN INJURY IS ACHIEVED, FOLLOW-UP CARE AND RECONSTRUCTION FOR COMPLETE FUNCTIONALITY AND ACCEPTABLE COSMETIC RESULTS IS LACKING. SONS OF THE FLAG HAS RECRUITED A TEAM OF RENOWNED SURGEONS WITH EXTENSIVE RESUMES IN BURN RECONSTRUCTION. SONS OF THE FLAG IDENTIFIES THE SURVIVING BURNED VETERAN OR FIRST RESPONDER IN NEED OF RECONSTRUCTION (WE CURRENTLY MAINTAIN A PATIENT PIPELINE). SKYPE IS UTILIZED TO ALLOW THE RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEONS TO EVALUATE AND RECORD RECONSTRUCTIVE NEEDS AND PLAN THE PROCEDURES REQUIRED TO IMPROVE THE PATIENT. THE PATIENT IS TRANSPORTED, UNDERGOES THE NECESSARY PROCEDURES, AND RECEIVES MENTAL SUPPORT, AS NECESSARY. ONCE THE CARE IS COMPLETE, THE SURVIVOR JOINS A REGISTRY SO FUTURE NEEDS CAN BE RECOGNIZED AND ADDRESSED.

MEDICAL FELLOWSHIPS: ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN BURN ASSOCIATION, APPROXIMATELY 486,000 PEOPLE ARE BURNED SEVERELY ENOUGH EACH YEAR TO REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. MEDICAL FELLOWSHIPS AT RESPECTED INSTITUTIONS THAT OFFER EXTENDED POST-SURGICAL TRAINING IN BURN-CARE, TRAUMA SURGERY AND SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES TO CONDUCT BASIC AND CLINICAL RESEARCH ARE CRITICALLY NEEDED. FELLOWSHIPS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN HELPING MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS EDUCATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF PHYSICIANS, RESEARCHERS, AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS WHILE ALSO ENHANCING THE MEDICAL CENTER'S ABILITY TO RECRUIT SOME OF THE MOST BRILLIANT MINDS IN MEDICINE. THE NEED FOR MORE BURN SPECIALISTS IS GREAT, AND ONE OF THE WAYS TO INCREASE THOSE NUMBERS IS TO OFFER FELLOWSHIPS THAT CAN SPARK THE INTEREST OF YOUNG PHYSICIANS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS, THEREBY CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE ADVANCES IN UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS OF BURN RESPONSES AND DISCOVER NEW AVENUES OF TREATMENT.

TASK FORE FIREFIGHTER SUPPORT PROGRAM: FIREFIGHTERS, BY THE NATURE OF THEIR PROFESSION, ARE GENERALLY OUR MOST LIKELY BENEFICIARIES OF WHAT SONS OF THE FLAG DOES ON A REGULAR BASIS. OUR TASK FORCE PROGRAM HELPS FIREFIGHTERS AND THEIR FAMILIES, WHEN A FIREFIGHTER SUFFERS A BURN INJURY. SOME OF THESE FIREFIGHTERS ARE STILL STRUGGLING TO RECOVER FROM BURNS THAT OCCURRED YEARS AGO.SONS OF THE FLAG HAS ALSO FORMED A NATIONAL TASK FORCE COMPRISED OF FIREFIGHTERS WHO WANT TO SPREAD THE WORD OF WHAT SONS OF THE FLAG STANDS FOR AND OUR MISSION TO REVOLUTIONIZE BURN CARE FOR VETERANS, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND FAMILIES.
