STREET DEMOCRACY'S MISSION IS TO CREATE LEGAL MECHANISMS THAT ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY THROUGH THE DEFENSE OF HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS AS SECURED BY LAW. AS WELL AS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ECONOMIC AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT MODELS THAT COMBAT AND CORRECT THE ORIGINS OF COMMUNITY DETERIORATION, A CONDITION WHICH LEADS TO AND EXACERBATES HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY.

THE ORGANIZATION WORKS WITH INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS TO ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF THEIR HOMELESSNESS. THOSE SERVICES, E.G. JOB TRAINING, EDUCATION, SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT, ETC., TO HELP RESOLVE CERTAIN CIVIL INFRACTIONS AND MISDEMEANORS THAT RESULTED FROM THEIR HOMELESSNESS OR CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR CONTINUED HOMELESSNESS. FOR VETERANS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES HOLISTIC CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LEGAL REPRESENTATION. IN ADDITION TO DIRECT SERVICES, THE ORGANIZATION ADVOCATES FOR POLICIES THAT MAKE IT HARDER TO FALL INTO HOMELESSNESS AND EASIER TO ESCAPE IT.
