CENTRAL AREA NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION WORKS TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN THE CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE AREAS OF COMMUNITY BUILDING, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING THOUGH ENGAGED AND INFORMD ACTIONS, FOSTERING A NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE EVERYONE CAN THRIVE.

Part 3 - Line 4a

IN 2019 CANDO STRENGTHENED CROSS-NEIGHBORHOOD PARTNERSHIPS, INCLUDING WORKING TOGETHER TO PRODUCE A BILINGUAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER FOCUSED ON NEIGHBORHOOD STORIES. WE PARTNERED WITH A SMALL COMMUNITY RADIO STATION TO RECORD AND TELL STORIES FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WHEN ANOTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION CLOSED, WE TOOK OVER THEIR YOUTH ORGANIZING PROGRAM, CALLED AGENTS OF CHANGE. WE ORGANIZED AND PARTNERED WITH OTHERS ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS INCLUDING THE ANNUAL CENTRAL FAIR, OUR ANNUAL NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING, THE CENTRAL JAMS MUSIC SERIES, SLOW ROLL BIKE RIDES, AND THE SOUTHSIDE BACK IN THE DAY EVENT. OUR PLANT-GROW-SHARE FOOD JUSTICE AND URBAN GARDENING PROGRAM HAD ITS FIFTH SEASON, WORKING WITH 20 LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS/FAMILIES THAT BUILT RAISED GARDEN BEDS, ATTENDED CLASSES, AND GREW VEGETABLES AT THEIR HOMES AND AT OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN. PLANT-GROW-SHARE ALSO GAVE AWAY PRODUCE THROUGH WEEKLY LITTLE FREE FARMERS MARKETS AND HOSTED A COMMUNITY HARVEST FEAST CELEBRATION AT THE END OF ITS SEASON.
