TO AID, ENCOURAGE, PROMOTE, AND SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND EDUCATION REGARDING THE SHELLFISH AND ANCILLARY FISHERIES OF THE NORTH PACIFIC

Part 3 - Line 4a

BSFRF SUPPORTED A FIELD PROJECT IN THE LATE SPRING OF 2021 IN COLLABORATION WITH NOAA AND ADFG FOR A TANNER/SNOW CRAB GROWTH COLLECTION CHARTER THAT OCCURRED IN LATE MARCH TO EARLY APRIL, 2021. THE CHARTERED VESSEL (F/V HALF MOON BAY) USED A SURVEY TRAWL (BSFRF NEPHROPS TRAWL) TO SAMPLE FOR PRE-MOLT SNOW AND TANNER CRAB AT SELECTED STATIONS IN THE BERING SEA. BOTH BSFRF AND AGENCY SCIENTISTS WERE ONBOARD TO SORT TRAWL CATCHES TO IDENTIFY PRE-MOLT CRABS WHICH WERE LIVE HELD ONBOARD. WHEN SAMPLING WAS COMPLETE, THE VESSEL TRANSPORTED LIVE CRAB BACK TO KODIAK, AK LABORATORY HOLDING FACILITIES. THE GROWTH CHARTER DEPARTED FROM AND RETURNED TO KODIAK.


BSFRF SUPPORTED A SECOND FIELD PROJECT IN THE FALL OF 2021 IN COLLABORATION WITH NOAA AND ADFG FOR A BRISTOL BAY RED KING CRAB TAGGING CHARTER THAT OCCURRED IN OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER, 2021. THE CHARTERED VESSEL (F/V PROVIDER) USED STANDARD CRAB POT FISHING GEAR TO SAMPLE FOR MATURE MALE AND FEMALE RED KING CRAB AT SELECTED STATIONS IN BRISTOL BAY. BOTH BSFRF AND AGENCY SCIENTISTS WERE ONBOARD TO COLLECT, SORT, TAG AND RELEASE CRAB. CRAB SAMPLING AND TAGGING INCLUDED PLACEMENT OF POP UP SATELLITE TAGS ON LIVE CRAB AND THEN RELEASING TAGGED INDIVIDUALS BACK INTO THE SEA. WHEN SAMPLING WAS COMPLETE, THE VESSEL TRANSITED BACK TO KODIAK AK.
