THE ORGANIZATION WAS FORMED FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING VISION, LEADERSHIP, COORDINATION, ADMINISTRATION AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO ALASKA'S LOCAL PUBLIC BROADCASTING INSTITUTIONS, AND TO PROVIDE STAFF AND OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES TO PUBLIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY AND GOVERNANCE BOARDS.

APBI PROVIDES STATIONS WITH SINGLE POINT OF CONTACT WITH FIVE DIFFERENT PUBLIC BROADCASTING PROGRAM PROVIDERS INCLUDING NPR AND AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA. APBI NEGOIATES GROUP PROGRAMMING BUY ON BEHALF OF ALASKAN BROADCASTERS, PAYS PROGRAM PROVIDERS, AND COLLECTS FEES FROM STATIONS.


APBI PROVIDES REPRESENTATION, LEADERSHIP AND INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES INFORMATION FOR PUBLIC MEDIA STATIONS. SERVICES INCLUDE GROUP PROGRAMMING BUYS, ADVOCACY AND CONNECTION WITH STATE AND FEDERAL FUNDERS, TRAINING AND COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE.


UNDER CONTRACTS FROM THE STATE OF ALASKA APBI HAS MANAGED THE ARCS SATELLITE SERVICE AND MAINTAINED A TROUBLE LINE FOR USERS OF THE STATE OF ALASKA OWNED ARCS (ALASKA RURAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE) TO REPORT OUTAGES AND ISSUES WITH SERVICE. THIS INCLUDES SUPPORTING THE ARCS COUNCIL, MANAGING THE CONTENT SELECTION AND DISTRIBUTION FOR THE ARCS SERVICE AS WELL AS MONITORING THE SIGNAL AS PROVIDED VIA SATELLITE TO COMMUNITIES RECEIVING THIS SERVICE. CONTRACTS FOR THESE SERVICES ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2020.


IN FY20, APBI TRANSITIONED FROM A SOA SUBSIDIZED ENGINEERING BUREAU TO A FEE FOR SERVICE BASED BROADCAST ENGINEERING SERVICE FOR RADIO STATIONS IN RURAL ALASKA. WE PROVIDE SIGNAL SERVICE RESTORATION AND EQUIPMENT REPAIR, PLANNING, ORDERING AND INSTALLATION OF NEW AND REPAIRED EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS REMOTE TROUBLESHOOTING SERVICE FOR BROADCAST AND EMERGENCY ALERTING EQUIPMENT. THESE SERVICES CONTINUED IN FISCAL YEAR 2021.
