CAWS MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE LIFE OF NEW YORK CITY YOUTH THROUGH THE VISUAL AND MULTIMEDIA ARTS. CAW SERVES THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE EACH YEAR, PRIMARILY IN UPPER MANHATTAN, THROUGH IN-SCHOOL AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL-TIME CLASSES,(CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)

CREATIVE ART WORKS RETURNED TO IN-PERSON IMPLEMENTATION OF ALL OF ITS PUBLIC ART YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS IN FY22. CAW SUCCESSFULLY OFFERED MORE THAN 265 YOUTH APPRENTICESHIPS THROUGH THE CREATION OF FIVE WORKS OF LARGE-SCALE PUBLIC ART; DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND BRANDING; AND CHARACTER DESIGN. YOUTH APPRENTICES (YAS) FROM THE FIVE BOROUGHS OF NYC, AGED 14-24, WERE GIVEN PART-TIME JOBS AFTER-SCHOOL AND/OR FULL-TIME DURING THE SUMMER, AND WORKED UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF CAW TEACHING ARTISTS AND PROGRAM MANAGEMENT STAFF. YOUTH WERE ENGAGED IN COLLABORATION WITH 8 NYC PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS, 5 OF THEM CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOLS, AND VIA COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS. CREATIVE ART WORKS IN-SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS SERVED 1,650 STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY IN THE 2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR, EXCEEDING OUR PRE-PANDEMIC NUMBERS AND THE LARGEST NUMBER SERVED BY THIS PROGRAM TO DATE. TEN SEMESTER OR YEAR-LONG PROGRAMS WERE OFFERED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH 9 NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND INCLUDED ARTS INTEGRATION AS WELL AS COURSES IN ART FOR ARTS SAKE. EXAMPLES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, MIXED MEDIA AND DIGITAL ARTS ALIGNED WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, CRIMINAL JUSTICE/CIVICS, AND SOCIAL STUDIES, ALONG WITH MURAL-MAKING, MAP-MAKING, AND ART AROUND THE WORLD. SPECIALIZED CURRICULA INCLUDED LESSONS TAILORED FOR AT-RISK TRANSFER SCHOOL STUDENTS, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, AND HONORS STUDENTS ON A HS MEDICAL TRACK. CAWS OUT-OF-SCHOOL-TIME (OST) ARTS PROGRAMS PROVIDE K-12 STUDENTS WITH ENRICHING, EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY. CAW SERVED NEARLY 600 PARTICIPANTS WITH 15 OST PROGRAMS IN COLLABORATION WITH 10 PARTNERS IN FY22. ALL PROGRAMS RETURNED TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION IN THE 2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR, AND WERE PROVIDED AFTER SCHOOL AND ON SATURDAYS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NYC TITLE I PUBLIC SCHOOLS. PROGRAMS RAN FOR A RANGE OF 8-16 WEEKS AND OFTEN IN CONSECUTIVE SEMESTERS, PROVIDING SAFE AND ENGAGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATIVE SELF-EXPRESSION AND CONNECTION WITH PEERS. ALL PROGRAMS PROVIDED PROFESSIONAL TEACHING ARTISTS IMPARTING ARTISTIC AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS THROUGH A WIDE VARIETY OF MATERIALS, WITH CURRICULA INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO SCULPTURE, CARTOONING & ANATOMY, PAINTING AND DRAWING, MURAL MAKING, ART AROUND THE WORLD: LATIN AMERICAN ARTISTS, AND PAINTING & DRAWING. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES INCLUDE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW INITIATIVES AS WELL AS CAWS FOURTH CORE PROGRAM, COMMUNITY ART-MAKING. THESE PROJECTS ENGAGE YOUTH WITH THEIR FAMILIES AS PART OF LARGER PUBLIC EVENTS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS. ART-MAKING ALIGNS WITH AND ENHANCES OUR PARTNERS GOALS FOR YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. IN FY22, CAW SAW THE RETURN TO FOUR IN-PERSON COMMUNITY ART-MAKING EVENTS, SERVING 275 PARTICIPANTS.
