SALUTE TO MUSIC PROGRAM:THE SALUTE TO MUSIC PROGRAM IS A FIFTY YEAR TRADITION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK. STUDENTS OF MIDDLE LEVEL SCHOOLS RECEIVE MUSIC INSTRUCTION EVERY SATURDAY MORNING AND DURING HOLIDAYS IN PREPARATION FOR THEIR SALUTE TO MUSIC CONCERT GIVEN AS PART OF A FIVE BOROUGH SERIES IN OUR SCHOOLS AND AT CARNEGIE HALL. THERE ARE ORCHESTRAS AND BANDS IN ADDITION TO JUNIOR TRAINING GROUPS. EACH OCTOBER, THE STUDENTS ARE RECOMMENDED BY THEIR JUNIOR HIGH/INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS TO AUDITION FOR THESE GROUPS.PRIMARILY AN EDUCATION PROGRAM, THE SALUTE TO MUSIC PROGRAM GIVES STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, COMING FROM ALL PARTS OF EACH BOROUGH, THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND PERFORM GOOD MUSIC TOGETHER. WITHOUT BARRIERS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES OR DIFFERING ACADEMIC SKILLS, THESE YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN MUSIC SKILLS AND APPRECIATION. THEY WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY OF RECEIVING PUBLIC RECOGNITION WHICH MANY HAVE NEVER HAD BEFORE.AN IMPORTANT ASSIST IS GIVEN TO THIS EXCELLENT PROGRAM BY A PRIVATE, NON-PROFIT, ORGANIZATION CALLED THE FRIENDS OF MUSIC FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, INC., WHICH WAS INCORPORATED IN DECEMBER, 1959. ITS PURPOSES AS DEFINED IN THE CHARTER ARE AS FOLLOWS:TO DISCOVER AND DEVELOP THE MUSICAL TALENTS AND ABILITIES OF THE BOYS AND GIRLS IN NEW YORK CITY MIDDLE LEVEL SCHOOLS.TO FOSTER INTEREST IN MUSIC AS AN IMPORTANT MEANS OF SELF-EXPRESSION FOR OUR PUPILS.TO USE INTEREST IN MUSIC AS A MEANS OF DIRECTING TEENAGE ACTIVITY INTO SOCIALLY AND PERSONALLY DESIRABLE CHANNELS.TO PROMOTE A MUSIC PROGRAM THAT CAN BE CONDUCTED OUTSIDE OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY.TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF BANDS, ORCHESTRAS, CHORAL GROUPS, AND OTHER MUSICAL ENSEMBLES, AND TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PUBLIC PERFORMANCES BY SUCH GROUPS.TO OBTAIN, RECEIVE AND SUPPLY FUNDS FOR HIRING TEACHERS, PURCHASING INSTRUMENTS, RENTING AND PURCHASING REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE FACILITIES, PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TALENTED AND NEEDY PUPILS, AND DEFRAYING OTHER COSTS INCIDENTAL TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROGRAM.TO SECURE THE COOPERATION OF CIVIC, RELIGIOUS AND COMMUNITY AGENCIES IN THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE PURPOSES HEREIN BEFORE DESCRIBED.TO EXPAND, AS AN EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY, THE PRESENT PROGRAM OF MUSIC IN MIDDLE LEVEL SCHOOLS OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK.
