FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS: CELEBRATING FORT WAYNE'S RIVERS AS A SOURCE OF RECREATION, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS IS DEDICATED TO ENHANCING THE COMMUNITY'S APPRECIATION, EXPERIENCE, AND USE OF THE RIVERS. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES RIVER CRUISES ABOARD A 54-FOOT CANAL BOAT MODELED AFTER AN AUTHENTIC 1840'S CANAL BOAT BEGINNING IN 2017. THE 1840'S-STYLE, FLAT BOTTOM BOAT WILL ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO EXPERIENCE THE RIVERS AND THE POTENTIAL THEY OFFER FOR DEVELOPMENT, RECREATION, AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING.

RIVER TOURS ABOARD OUR REPLICA CANAL BOAT CONTINUES TO EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITY, AND PARTICULARLY OUR YOUTH. FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS REACHED OVER 4,600 INDIVIDUALS DURING OUR 2023 TWENTY-WEEK SEASON. WE PROVIDED 178 SWEET BREEZE PUBLIC TOURS OF OUR NORTHEAST INDIANA RIVERS. WE EXPANDED OUR SPECIALTY TOURS FOR AN EXPANDED RIDERSHIP BASE PROVING FUN AND ENTERTAINING OPTIONS TO THE BOATING EXPERIENCE AND CONDUCTED 22 PRIVATE TOURS FOR REGIONAL GROUPS AND OUTINGS. WE HOSTED 21 EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS, OFFERING HISTORY APPROPRIATE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND NARRATION FOR 3RD - 5TH GRADE STUDENTS WITH TWO ALL-ABILITIES FIELD TRIP OFFERINGS ON OUR FULLY ACCESSIBLE BOAT. CLEAN DRAINS FEST 2023 WAS HELD SEPTEMBER 23RD TO CELEBRATE AND RECOGNIZE STORM DRAIN ARTISTS, EDUCATE COMMUNITY, CELEBRATE WORLD RIVERS DAY, AND ENJOY ACTIVITIES AND RIDES ON SWEET BREEZE. OVER 3,000 ADULTS AND CHILDREN ENJOYED THE EVENT, WITH 531 PEOPLE TAKING SWEET BREEZE. CLEAN DRAINS IS A THREE-YEAR COLLABORATION BETWEEN FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS AND FORT WAYNE CITY UTILITIES, WITH A GOAL OF RAISING AWARENESS OF THE VALUE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE ST. JOSEPH, ST. MARY'S, AND MAUMEE RIVERS, THROUGH THE SIMPLE SLOGAN: "ONLY RAIN IN THE DRAIN". 2023 IS OUR THIRD YEAR OF THE CLEAN DRAINS FORT WAYNE INITIATIVE, TRANSFORMING COMMUNITY DRAINS INTO ENGAGING WORKS OF ART THAT INFORMED RESIDENTS THAT TO PROTECT OUR RIVERS WE MUST BE MINDFUL OF WHAT GOES DOWN OUR STORM DRAINS. IN ADDITION TO OUR 100 STORM DRAIN MURALS, WE HAVE IDENTIFIED AND MARKED OVER 2,000 STORM DRAINS WITH SPECIAL "ONLY RAIN IN THE DRAIN" AWARENESS MEDALLIONS DURING THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD.
