WOMEN FOR AFGHAN WOMEN (WAW) IS A GRASSROOTS CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROTECTING AND PROMOTING THE RIGHTS OF DISENFRANCHISED AFGHAN WOMEN AND GIRLS IN AFGHANISTAN AND NEW YORK. IN PARTICULAR, WAW WORKS TO HELP AFGHAN WOMEN AND GIRLS EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS TO PURSUE THEIR INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL TO SELF-DETERMINATION, AND TO REPRESENTATION IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE: POLITICAL, SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND ECONOMICS. WAW RELENTLESSLY ADVOCATES FOR WOMEN`S RIGHTS AND CHALLENGES THE NORMS THAT UNDERPIN GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE TO ATTITUDES AND BRING ABOUT CHANGE.

GUIDANCE/SUPPORT CENTERS AND SHELTERS - WOMEN FOR AFGHAN WOMEN (WAW) PROVIDED FAMILY ORIENTED GUIDANCE AT ITS FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTERS IN AFGHANISTAN, PROVIDED SAFE PLACES TO STAY, LEARN AND ASSOCIATE WITH OTHERS FOR WOMEN AT ITS WOMEN SHELTERS; PROVIDED PRO BONO COUNSELING, MEDIATION AND LEGAL ADVICE. MOREOVER, AT ITS CHILDREN SUPPORT CENTERS WAW HOUSED HUNDREDS OF KIDS WHO WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN LIVING WITH THEIR MOTHERS IN PRISONS WITHOUT ANY ACCESS TO APPROPRIATE NUTRITION, HEALTH SERVICES OR EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES. WAW ALSO PROVIDED WOMEN RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING PROGRAMS OF AFGHAN MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN MASJIDS, POLICE STATIONS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, SCHOOLS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICERS.


COMMUNITY CENTER AND ADVOCACY - A COMMUNITY CENTER LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE AFGHAN COMMUNITY IN QUEENS, NEW YORK PROVIDES A NUMBER OF PRO BONO PROGRAMS AND CRISIS SERVICES TO AFGHAN IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEE WOMEN, FAMILIES AND CHILDREN INCLUDING IMMIGRATION AND EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COUNSELING AND BOYS AND GIRLS LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS.
