HEALTH EQUITY:IN MID-SUMMER 2021 NEHI COLLABORATED WITH ITS MEMBER ORGANIZATION ELI LILLY & COMPANY TO PLAN AND CONVENE A VIRTUAL SUMMIT MEETING ON HEALTH EQUITY. NEHI'S EFFORT WAS SUPPORTED BY A $175,000 SPONSORSHIP FROM ELI LILLY. AVALERE HEALTH AND THE CEO ACTION FOR RACIAL EQUITY COALITION ALSO COLLABORATED IN THE PROJECT. THE VIRTUAL SUMMIT MEETING (EQUITY IN HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE: A ROADMAP TO COLLABORATIVE ACTION) WAS HELD ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 WITH OVER 350 PARTICIPANTS AND RESULTED IN A PUBLICATION (EQUITY IN HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE: A ROADMAP TO COLLABORATIVE ACTION) RELEASED IN DECEMBER 2021.


PCORI PATIENT PAYER COMMUNICATION:NEHI RECEIVED A $100,000 AWARD FROM THE PATIENT CENTERED OUTCOMES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (PCORI) TO CONVENE A CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATION AMONG PATIENT GROUPS AND HEALTH CARE PAYERS (INSURERS, SELF-INSURED EMPLOYERS, ETC.) REGARDING PAYER DECISIONS ON COVERAGE OF NEWLY INTRODUCED NOVEL DRUGS. THE PROJECT ENTAILED CREATION OF A PRE-CONFERENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE THAT GUIDED DESIGN OF THE CONFERENCE AND OF A FINAL PUBLICATION THAT OUTLINED NEW PRINCIPLES FOR TRUSTWORTHY COMMUNICATION AMONG PATIENT GROUPS AND PAYERS REGARDING NOVEL THERAPIES.


PILOTS IN PRIOR AUTHORIZATION:NEHI WAS FUNDED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS HEALTH POLICY COMMISSION (THE STATE'S COMMISSION OVERSEEING OVERALL HEALTH CARE SPENDING IN MASSACHUSETTS AND RECOMMENDING STEPS TO LIMIT SPENDING TO THE RATE OF GROWTH IN THE STATE ECONOMY) AND THE MASS COLLABORATIVE (A VOLUNTARY, OPEN ORGANIZATION OF MORE THAN 35 PAYERS, PROVIDERS, AND TRADE ASSOCIATIONS DEDICATED TO REDUCING COMPLEX AND CUMBERSOME HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESSES IN MASSACHUSETTS) TO ASSEMBLE A GROUP OF MASSACHUSETTS PAYERS, PROVIDERS, EMPLOYER, AND PATIENT REPRESENTATIVES (THE "STEERING COMMITTEE"), TO DETERMINE WHETHER THEY COULD AGREE ON A SET OF REFORMS THAT MIGHT FEASIBLY BE IMPLEMENTED TO REDUCE TENSIONS AROUND PRIOR AUTHORIZATION, CONSIDERING A PRIORITIZED SET OF CONCERNS. NEHI CONDUCTED AN EXTENSIVE LITERATURE SCAN, HELD THREE VIRTUAL STEERING COMMITTEE MEETINGS, AND PRODUCED A WHITE PAPER ("STREAMLINING PRIOR AUTHORIZATION") IN SEPTEMBER 2021, FOLLOWED BY A WEBINAR IN DECEMBER 2021 TO DISSEMINATE THE PROJECT RESULTS.


OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES DURING FISCAL 2021 INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING:ADVANCING THE ADOPTION OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTEGRATION IN PRIMARY CARE:NEHI RECEIVED $150,000 FROM AETNA ($100K) AND BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD NORTH CAROLINA ($50K) FOR A PROJECT TO ADVANCE THE ADOPTION OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTEGRATION IN PRIMARY CARE. NEHI ASSEMBLED AN ADVISORY GROUP OF TWENTY-TWO INDIVIDUALS WITH EXPERTISE IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTEGRATION TO DEVELOP GUIDANCE TO PRIMARY CARE PRACTICES, PAYERS, AND THIRD-PARTY VENDORS REGARDING APPROACHES TO COLLABORATION THAT WILL MEANINGFULLY IMPROVE THE UPTAKE OF INTEGRATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH. THE FULL ADVISORY GROUP MET THRICE BETWEEN MARCH AND AUGUST 2022 IN ADDITION TO SMALL GROUP MEETINGS AND INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS WITH A SUBSET OF THE GROUP. NEHI CONDUCTED BACKGROUND RESEARCH TO INFORM THE DISCUSSIONS AND FACILITATED THE DISCUSSION. NEHI WILL DEVELOP A REPORT BASED ON THE ADVISORY GROUP DISCUSSIONS IN FALL 2022.VIDEO VALUE:NEHI RECEIVED $150,000 FROM GOOGLE FOR A PROJECT TO UNDERSTAND HOW ASYNCHRONOUS VIDEOS AVAILABLE ONLINE CAN SUPPORT DIABETES MANAGEMENT AMONG YOUNG ADULTS WITH DIABETES. NEHI CONDUCTED A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE, A NATIONAL ONLINE SURVEY AND A FOCUS GROUP OF YOUNG ADULTS WITH DIABETES, AND A FOCUS GROUP OF CLINICIANS TO IDENTIFY HOW ONLINE VIDEOS CAN EFFECTIVELY SUPPORT DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT AMONG YOUNG ADULTS. A REPORT OF THE FINDINGS WILL BE COMPLETED IN FALL 2022.
