DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, INC. D/B/A PORTLAND DOWNTOWN (PD) PROVIDES MANAGEMENT SERVICES THROUGH A CONTRACT WITH THE CITY OF PORTLAND, MAINE THAT BUYS GRAFFITI REMOVAL FROM CITY PROPERTY, LITTER PATROL AND COLLECTION ON STREETS, SIDEWALKS, AND PUBLIC AREAS WITHIN DOWNTOWN, CLEANING AND PAINTING OF ALL FURNITURE AND FIXTURES, SIDEWALK SWEEPING, SIDEWALK SNOW PLOWING, MAINTENANCE OF TREE WELLS, CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF PUBLIC RESTROOMS, AND INSTALLATION OF WINTER LIGHTS AND STREET BANNERS. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE INTENDED TO ENHANCE CLEANING AND BEAUTIFICATION SERVICES TO THE DOWNTOWN AREA AND TO PROVIDE CLEANER, MORE WELCOMING SPACES FOR ALL TO ENJOY.


PD IS THE DAY-TO-DAY MANAGEMENT ENTITY FOR THE DOWNTOWN-PORTLAND REGION. FREE DOWNTOWN EVENTS INCLUDE: WINTER LIGHTS, WINTER HOLIDAY EVENTS, DOWNTOWN WORKER APPRECIATION DAY, AND SUMMER OUTDOOR MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE EVENING IN DOWNTOWN PARKS, TO NAME A FEW. PD CO-MANAGES A VISITOR KIOSK WITH VISIT PORTLAND IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA TO ENCOURAGE TOURISM.


PD MAINTAINS A PARKING VALIDATION PROGRAM: PARK & WORK. PARK & WORK PROVIDES PARKING DISCOUNTS FOR LOW TO MODERATE INCOME EMPLOYEES, OR UNPAID VOLUNTEERS. EMPLOYEES PRESENT PARKING TICKETS TO THEIR EMPLOYERS, WHO IN TURN AFFIX A DISCOUNT STAMP.
