THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE BELIEVES THAT CINEMA IS A COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE WITH THE POWER TO ENTERTAIN, ENLIGHTEN AND INSPIRE. WE BUILD A DIVERSE AND ENGAGED FILM COMMUNITY THROUGH IMMERSIVE FILM CURATION, CONVERSATION, AND PRESENTATION. WE BRIDGE THE FILMMAKER TO THE AUDIENCE AND FILM HISTORY TO ITS FUTURE.

THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE ENSURES PUBLIC ACCESS TO LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL FILMS OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AND OF HISTORIC, CULTURAL OR EDUCATIONAL IMPORTANCE. PROGRAMS INCLUDE CLASSICS OF AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL CINEMA, NEW INDEPENDENT AND WORLD FILM, INCLUDING RARE NITRATE & ARCHIVAL PRINTS, 70MM, DIGITAL LASER PROJECTION, ETC. WITH POST-SCREENING FILMMAKER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE AUDIENCE. FILMS ARE PRESENTED IN STATE-OF-THE-ART THEATRES AS THEY WERE MEANT TO BE SEEN AND HEARD, PROVIDING ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCES. IN ADDITION, SINCE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, FILMS WERE PRESENTED AT DRIVE-IN AS WELL AS STREAMED ONLINE AND FILMMAKER DISCUSSIONS MADE LIVE ONLINE.WHEN RE-OPENING THE THEATRES IN JUNE 2021, THE CINEMATHEQUE LAUNCHED NEW PROGRAMS AT LOS FELIZ THEATRE. SINCE 1999, MORE THAN 11,500 PROGRAMS PRESENTED AT THE HISTORIC EGYPTIAN THEATRE, THE AERO THEATRE AND THE LOS FELIZ THEATRE AND HAVE FEATURED OVER 6,200 GUESTS. CINEMATHEQUE COLLABORATORS INCLUDE AMPAS, UCLA ARCHIVES, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM, BFI, CINEMATHEQUE FRANCAIS, GOETHE INSTITUT, ICAA, HFPA, JAPAN FILM FOUNDATION & THE CONSULATES OF MANY COUNTRIES. THE CINEMATHEQUE ALSO PRESENTS SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS. DURING THE CLOSURE OF THE THEATRES, BEYOND FEST WAS PRESENTED IN FALL 2020 AT THE DRIVE IN, IN THE FALL 2021 BEYOND FEST WAS PRESENTED ACROSS TOWN AT VARIOUS VENUES. THE EGYPTIAN IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATION. DURING THE PANDEMIC, THE CINEMATHEQUE MODERNIZED TS I.T. INFRASTRUCTURE WITH A NEW WEBSITE, A NEW DATABASE AND A NEW POINT OF SALE TICKET SYSTEM. THE CINEMATHEQUE IS NO LONGER PRINTING, MAILING A CALENDAR. AN E-MAIL NEWSLETTER IS SENT TO 100,000+ PEOPLE.THE CINEMATHEQUE AWARD (GIVEN TO A FILMMAKER MAKING A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE ART OF THE MOVING PICTURE) WAS PRESENTED ONLINE TO SPIKE LEE, ON JANUARY 14, 2021.
