THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIBRARY DOCUMENTS, PROVIDES ACCESS TO, AND OFFERS EDUCATION ABOUT HISTORIES OF PEOPLE WORKING IN COMMUNITY TO CREATE CHANGE.

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE LIBRARY ASSISTED AUTHORS,ARTISTS,SCHOLARS, AND OTHER RESEARCHERS IN ACCESSING THE ARCHIVES WITH A GOAL OF INCREASING AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF LOCAL COMMUNITY HISTORIES,PRIMARILY THROUGH VIRTUAL SERVICES. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED ACQUIRING NEW COLLECTIONS DOCUMENTING LOCAL HISTORIES, DIGITIZING COLLECTIONS WITH AN AIM OF INCREASING ACCESS, COLLECTING ORAL HISTORIES, ASSISTING WITH REMOTE RESEARCH REQUESTS, AND PROVIDING ARCHIVAL MATERIALS FOR EXHIBITS ON LOCAL HISTORIES AND COMMUNITY ISSUES, AS WELL AS FOR A FILM FESTIVAL, DOCUMENTARIES, BOOKS, AND DIGITAL PROJECTS.


THE LIBRARY WORKED DIRECTLY WITH SCHOOLS, EDUCATORS, AND STUDENTS, AS WELL AS STAFF OF LOCAL COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY RESIDENTS, TO ACCESS, USE, AND ANALYZE ARCHIVES WITH A GOAL OF INCREASING THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN FROM AND UNDERSTAND LOCAL COMMUNITY HISTORIES. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED CONDUCTING CLASS PRESENTATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS, PRIMARILY VIRTUALLY, AIMED AT INCREASING CAPACITY FOR CIVIC PARTICIPATION ON ISSUES IMPACTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY; PARTNERING WITH A LOCAL UNIVERSITY ON A PILOT PROJECT TO INVOLVE STUDENTS IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE ARCHIVES; AND PROVIDING ADDITIONAL PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS TO STUDENTS, REACHING AN ESTIMATED 1,500 - 2,000.


THE LIBRARY OFFERED SERVICES/RESOURCES FOR LOCAL YOUTH AND OTHER RESIDENTS WITH A GOAL OF STRENGTHENING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED HOSTING A COMMUNITY FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM AND PROVIDING FOOD, CLOTHING, HYGIENE RESOURCES, MOSTLY TO LOW-INCOME BLACK AND LATINX RESIDENTS FROM THE LIBRARY'S SOUTH LOS ANGELES NEIGHBORHOOD.
