YOUTH BUILD PAINT INSTALL AND MAINTAIN HONEY BEE HIVES IN COMMUNITY SPACE IN DISINVESTED NEIGHBORHOODS WHILE ALSO ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN POLLINATOR FRIENDLY PRACTICES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION.

PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT AND JOB SKILLS TRAINING: 6 YOUTH AGES 16-19 WERE EMPLOYED PATY-TIME. YOUTH WORKED 3-12 HOURS PER WEEK AND WERE COMPENSATED $13-$14.50 PER HOUR. EMPLOYMENT INCLUDED VOLUNTEER STAFF PROVISION OF BEEKEEPING INSTRUCTION GENERAL SUPERVISION GUIDANCE IN FINANCIAL LITERACY AND BUDGETING PROBLEM SOLVING AROUND OBSTACLES TO EMPLOYMENT AND TIMELINESS AND SHORT-TERM COUNSELING TO ADDRESS INTERSECTION OF MENTAL HEALTH AND EMPLOYMENT.
INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF BEE HIVES IN COMMUNITY GARDENS IN DISINVESTED NEIGHBORHOODS. 23 BEE HIVES AND APPROXIMATELY 1.2 MILLION HONEY BEES WERE MAINTAINED FRO JANUARY 0 DECEMBER 2021. MAINTENANCE INCLUDED: REGULAR HIVE CHECKS HONEY HARVESTING INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT FEEDING OF SUGAR WATER INSULATION TO PROTECT AGAINST WINTER CLIMATE AND INSTALLATION OF MOUSE GUARDS.
HOSTING FO FREE COMMUNITY-BASED WORKSHOPS: WEEKLY WORKSHOPS WERE HELD IN 2 OF THE HUNEEBEE OPERATED GARDENS FROM JULY - SEPTEMBER 2021. WORKSHOPS WERE ATTENDED BY GROUPS RANGING FROM 2-15 PEOPLE AND RANGING FROM AGE 4 - AGE 80. APPROXIMATELY 80 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDED ONE OR MORE WORKSHOPS. WORKSHOPS INCLUDED TALKS ON HONEY BEE BIOLOGY GARDEN TOURS HIVE CHECK DEMOS TALKS ON VARIETIES OF NATIVE BEES AND BUILDING OF NATIVE BEE HOMES.
