Part 3 - Line 4a
THIS YEAR CONTINUED TO PRESENT UNUSUAL CHALLENGES DUE TO THE ONGOING PANDEMIC. RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER PROHIBITED TRAVEL TO ALL STUDENTS AND TRAINEES WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND THE NUMBER OF TEAMS. 14 OF 20 TRIPS WERE CANCELLED AND ONLY 36 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT ASSISTED IN PROVIDING ESSENTIAL HEALTHCARE BY BEING INVOLVED IN 1,117 MEDICAL VISITS IN HAITI AND 1294 IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC; 79 ENT SURGERICAL PROCEDURES WERE COMPLETED; AND 209 SCREENINGS FOR HEARING LOSS WERE PERFORMED. THROUGH THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION IN VILLA VERDE (A SQUATTER COMMUNITY IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF SANTO DOMINGO, DR) COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROVIDED PRIMARY CARE ON A REGUALR BASIS, CONTINUING WITH HOME VISITS ONLY DUE TO PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS. CONSTRUCTION OF THE PERMANENT MEDICAL CLINIC IN VILLA VERDE WAS UNDERWAY WITH A COMMITMENT FROM THE DOMINICAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH TO ESTABLISH THIS AS A PRIMARY CARE UNIT WITH THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE CLINIC ONCE IT IS COMPLETED. THIS YEAR, COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT CONTINUED TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AS NEEDED TO THE PERALTA CLINIC WHICH CONTINUES TO BE OPERATED BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY BOARD AND FINANCIALLY SUPPORTED BY THE DOMINICAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH. THREE VIRTUAL POST GRADUATE MEDICAL CONFERENCES COVERING PEDIATRICS, NEUROLOGY & PSYCHIATRY WERE CONDUCTED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.IN SANTO DOMINGO, THE GUEST HOUSE WAS USED FOR THE MEDICAL AND SURGICAL TEAMS. IT WAS RENTED AT OTHER TIMES TO GENERATE INCOME TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT OPERATIONS AND PROJECTS. IN HAITI, MEDICAL TEAMS WERE STILL NOT ABLE TO PARTICIPATE DUE TO POLITICAL UNREST AND SAFETY CONCERNS. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT'S SUPPORT, HAITIAN STAFF CONTINUED TO PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE AT THE CLINIC THROUGHOUT THE YEAR INCLUDING PRIMARY CARE, CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING AND TREATMENT, FAMILY PLANNING, AND HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM.
