TO WORK RELENTLESSLY FOR THE DAY WHEN CANCER NO LONGER THREATENS ANY CHILD

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

RESEARCH: WOKC HAS SIGNIFICANTLY ADVANCED INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND HAS SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVED SURVIVAL RATES IN PEDIATRIC CANCER. FOR OVER FOUR DECADES, WOKC HAS FUNDED A WIDE RANGE OF NATIONAL CANCER RESEARCH PROJECTS IN ALMOST EVERY PEDIATRIC CANCER CATEGORY. WOKC CAREFULLY ANALYZES AND SELECTS INNOVATIVE PROMISING RESEARCH STUDIES THAT MIGHT NOT RECEIVE TRADITIONAL FUNDING. WOKC'S INFLUENTIAL CONTRIBUTION IN THE PEDIATRIC SPACE THROUGH THE FUNDING OF MILLIONS IN SEED MONEY FOR NOVEL CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH PROJECTS HAS YIELDED OVER 22 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL GRANT MONEY FROM THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE AND OTHER SIGNIFICANT CANCER- FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS.

BUDDY BAG PROGRAM: A POTENTIAL CANCER DIAGNOSIS IS OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY AN IMMEDIATE AND UNEXPECTED ADMISSION TO A PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL, LEAVING FAMILIES UNPREPARED AND WITHOUT THE ITEMS NEEDED FOR A LENGTHY HOSPITAL STAY. BUDDY BAGS EASE THE SUDDEN AND UNCOMFORTABLE TRANSITION FROM HOME OR PEDIATRICIAN'S OFFICE TO HOSPITAL FOR BOTH THE CHILD AND PARENTS AND ARE FILLED WITH ESSENTIALS INCLUDING TOILETRIES, ELECTRONICS, GAMES, TOYS AND COMFORT ITEMS. ONE MOTHER SAID, "WE HAD BEEN INPATIENT FOR ABOUT THREE NIGHTS WITH NO SLEEP, WITH A LIFE-THREATENING DIAGNOSIS. MY DAUGHTER FINALLY GOT SOME REST AND I COULDN'T SLEEP. I REALIZED THERE WAS A REAL PILLOW IN THE BUDDY BAG AND I CRIED MYSELF INTO THE BEST SLEEP I HAD IN THREE NIGHTS."

WARRIOR PROGRAM: WOKC REALIZES THAT CANCER AFFECTS MORE THAN JUST THE CHILD WHO RECEIVED THE CANCER DIAGNOSIS. THIS UNIQUE PROGRAM GIVES HOPE AND SUPPORT TO OUR MIGHTLY WARRIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES. EXTENDING BEYOND THE CHILD, WOKC FOCUSES ON THE SOCIAL WELL BEING OF THE ENTIRE FAMILY - MOM, DAD, SIBLINGS AND OTHERS. WOKC'S UNIQUE PROGRAM PROVIDES FUN AND FREE EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR GIVING HOPE AND ENJOYMENT TO AMUSEMENT VENUES, SPORTING EVENTS, HOLIDAY PARTIES, AND OTHER SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES TO SPEND TIME WITH OTHER FAMILIES WHO ARE FACING SIMILIAR CHALLENGES. PARENTS HAVE COMMENTED THAT THESE WOKC SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES ARE "MEDICINE FOR THEIR SOUL."
