THE MISSION OF CHARLESTON STAGE COMPANY IS TO PRODUCE LIVE THEATRE OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER FOCUSING ON PLAYS WHICH EXCITE AND INCITE THE IMAGINATION, AND INCLUDE INDIGENOUS AND ORIGINAL WORKS THAT CELEBRATE THE RICH HERITAGE AND HISTORY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA LOWCOUNTRY.

FOUNDED BY PLAYWRIGHT, JULIAN WILES IN 1978, CHARLESTON STAGE IS SOUTH CAROLINA'S LARGEST PROFESSIONAL THEATRE COMPANY. CHARLESTON STAGE IS A 501(C)3 NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION IN RESIDENCE AT THE HISTORIC DOCK STREET THEATRE. DURING THE COMPANY'S 44 YEARS, CHARLESTON STAGE HAS PRESENTED OVER 300 PRODUCTIONS AND PLAYED TO A COLLECTIVE AUDIENCE OF OVER ONE MILLION. IN ADDITION TO PRODUCING ENGAGING, HIGH-QUALITY PERFORMANCES, WE INVEST HEAVILY IN OUR MISSION OF THEATRE ARTS EDUCATION, UTILIZING A STAFF OF PROFESSIONAL THEATRE ARTISTS COMMITTED TO SHARING THEIR EXPERTISE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION.


CHARLESTON STAGE'S NEWEST INITIATIVE, CITYSTAGE, IS DESIGNED TO EXPAND OUR WORK BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE DOCK STREET THEATRE AND INTO THE GREATER COMMUNITY. THE CITYSTAGE TEAM FOCUSES ON EXPANDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOLS, RELIGIOUS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS IN THE CHARLESTON AREA, NOT ONLY TO BRING THE WORK OF CHARLESTON STAGE INTO THOSE COMMUNITIES BUT TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL THEATRE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE WORK AND MISSIONS OF THOSE ORGANIZATIONS THEMSELVESBUILDING TRUE TWO-WAY PARTNERSHIPS.
