ENRICH LIVES AND EXPAND THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHILDREN, ADULTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH DIVERSE EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT ADVANCE LITERACY IN ITS MANY FORMS AND TO PROMOTE LIFELONG LEARNING, WHICH RESULTS IN AN INFORMED AND EMPOWERED COMMUNITY.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CHILDREN FROM GRADES K - 3 MEET MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND ENGAGING EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE AVAILABLE IN PART BY PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER LOCAL NONPROFITS INCLUDING ART PROJECTS WITH THE BASCOM, SCIENCE PROJECTS WITH HIGHLANDS/CASHIERS LAND TRUST AND HIGHLANDS NATURE CENTER, AND YOGA WITH YOGA OF HIGHLANDS. HOMEWORK HELPERS STUDENTS FROM 4 - 12 GRADE MEET FIVE DAYS PER WEEK FOR ASSISTANCE WITH HOMEWORK, PAPERS, RESEARCH, AND OVERALL COMPREHENSION OF STUDENT CURRICULUM. STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO AGE APPROPRIATE GROUPS FOR ONE-ON-ONE AND GROUP ASSISTANCE. THE LITERACY COUNCIL WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE TEACHERS TO ENSURE HOMEWORK COMPLETION, TEST PREPARATION, AND THE


BEST COURSE OF REMEDIATION IF A STUDENT IS STRUGGLING IN A PARTICULAR SUBJECT. INDIVIDUAL TUTORING ONE-ON-ONE AND/OR SMALL GROUP TUTORING IS DESIGNED TO BRING STUDENTS UP TO GRADE LEVEL IN READING, MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, OR ANY OTHER SUBJECT FOR PRIMARY, ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND ADULT LEVELS. VOLUNTEER TUTORS WORK UNDER STAFF SUPERVISION AND HAVE ACCESS TO THE LITERACY COUNCIL LIBRARY OF RESEARCH-AND-SUCCESS-BASED METHODS AND MATERIALS. THE LITERACY COUNCIL WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE STUDENTS' TEACHERS AND PARENTS, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING PLACEMENT TESTING, TO DETERMINE A LEARNING PLAN UNIQUE TO EACH STUDENTS' NEEDS.


IN-SCHOOL TUTORING FRANKLIN AREA VOLUNTEERS (FORMER EDUCATORS) GO INTO FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY TO WORK WITH STRUGGLING K - 3 GRADERS BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND IN SMALL GROUP SETTINGS AS DIRECTED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) CLASSES ARE DESIGNED FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS FROM NUMEROUS NATIVE LANGUAGES TO TEACH READING AND WRITING PROFICIENCY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. CLASSES ARE CONVENIENTLY HELD AFTER REGULAR WORK HOURS AND INCLUDE A FREE DINNER AND CHILDCARE. HIGH-SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA (GED AND HI-SET) WEEKLY CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO OBTAIN THEIR GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA AND TO BETTER PREPARE THEM FOR THE WORKFORCE. THE GED INSTRUCTOR FACILITATES PRE- TESTING AND INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION IN ADDITION TO AN ONLINE PRACTICE PROGRAM FOR THE STUDENT TO WORK ON AT HOME. DINNER AND CHILDCARE ARE PROVIDED FOR FREE. ADULT LITERACY ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING IS AVAILABLE FOR ADULTS WANTING TO BUILD AND/OR STRENGTHEN THEIR LITERACY SKILLS. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES RESUME BUILDING, COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM PREPARATION AND MORE. EARLY LEARNERS THE LITERACY COUNCIL WORKS WITH SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE FREE LITERACY OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING MACON COUNTY PROGRAM FOR PROGRESS, HIGHLANDS CHILD COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER, AND THE SUNSHINE SCHOOL. SENIOR BOOK EXCHANGE THE LITERACY COUNCIL PROVIDES LARGE PRINT BOOKS TO SENIOR CARE FACILITIES IN MACON COUNTY. BOOKS ARE DELIVERED TO THE FACILITIES AND EXCHANGED ON A REGULAR BASIS. DOLLY PARTON IMAGINATION LIBRARY BOOKS ARE SENT MONTHLY TO CHILDREN FROM BIRTH TO THEIR FIFTH BIRTHDAY, ALL FREE OF COST TO THE FAMILIES. THIS VITAL EDUCATION PROGRAM IS NOW SERVING MORE THAN 1,000 CHILDREN IN MACON COUNTY.
