GENERAL PROGRAM - PROVIDED LEGAL AND ADVOCACY ASSISTANCE TO INDIAN NATIONS AND INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES WORKING TO PRESERVE THEIR LANDS, ENVIRONMENTS, CULTURES, AND OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2021 INCLUDED GRANTING AND TRANSFERRING OWNERSHIP OF A (NEARLY) 600-ACRE TRACT OF LAND IN OKLAHOMA TO THE GAR CREEK SEMINOLE INDIAN COMMUNITY FOR ITS CEREMONIES AND CULTURAL EDUCATION PROJECTS. ALSO PROVIDED LEGAL COUNSEL TO THE ASSINIBOINE AND GROS VENTRE TRIBES IN MONTANA IN A LAWSUIT TO STOP MINERAL EXPLORATION ON LANDS ADJACENT TO THE FORT BELKNAP RESERVATION THAT THREATENS TO RETURN GOLD MINING TO THE REGION AND THAT COULD EXACERBATE WATER POLLUTION CAUSED BY THE FORMER ZORTMAN AND LANDUSKY GOLD MINES.


BRAZIL - WORKED WITH INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY LEADERS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO BRING INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION TO THREATS FACED BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON. ENGAGED UNITED NATIONS AND ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERTS/MECHANISMS TO PRESS BRAZIL TO ADDRESS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON.


INDIGENOUS LAND TITLING - RESEARCHED LAND TITLING ISSUES AND PROJECTS IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA AND, IN 2021, BEGAN TO PLAN A MULTI-YEAR PROGRAM TO DESIGN AND ESTABLISH AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OR INSTITUTE THAT CAN PROVIDE TECHNICAL AND LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP AND ENABLE COMMUNITIES TO SECURE THEIR LAND TITLES AND BRING LANDS UNDER INDIGENOUS OWNERSHIP AT A FASTER PACE THROUGHOUT THE REGION.
