THE DETROIT PUBLIC THEATRE PRODUCES NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PLAYS AND PROGRAMS WITH WORLD-CLASS WRITERS, DIRECTORS, ACTORS, AND DESIGNERS IN THE HEART OF DETROIT'S CULTURAL DISTRICT. THE ORGANIZATION CREATES BOLD, RELEVANT WORK THAT ILLUMINATES THE THRILLS, JOYS, AND CHALLENGES OF THE SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE.

WHILE LIVE THEATRE WAS PAUSED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE DETROIT PUBLIC THEATRE PIVOTED TO VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING FOR THE 2020-2021 SEASON. THE ORGANIZATION COLLABORATED WITH CHAUTAUQUA THEATER COMPANY, DETROIT PUBLIC TELEVISION, AND WNED BUFFALO TO REACH OVER 10,000 VIEWERS WITH TWO FILMED SOLO PIECES. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO COLLABORATED ON TWO NATIONAL FESTIVALS: THE BLACK MOTHERHOOD AND PARENTING NEW PLAY FESTIVAL AND THE BREATH PROJECT.


SHAKESPEARE IN PRISON PAUSED ITS IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING WHEN PRISON FACILITIES CLOSED TO VISITORS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE PROGRAM SHIFTED AND BEGAN MAKING ACTIVITY PACKETS TO SEND TO PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AND HAS CONTINUED TO DO SO ALL YEAR. THE PROGRAM HAS CONTINUED ITS VIRTUAL WORK WITH ALUMNI OF THE PROGRAM WHO HAVE SINCE BEEN RELEASED.
